Flexible city route itinerary

Day 1 · Wed, Jun 10
Istanbul

Arrival and first stop

  1. Sultanahmet Square — Sultanahmet
Historic heart of old Istanbul and the best gentle first stop to orient yourself after arrival; morning, ~45 minutes.

  2. Hagia Sophia — Sultanahmet
One of the city’s marquee landmarks, ideal early before crowds build; late morning, ~1.5 hours.

  3. Blue Mosque — Sultanahmet
Right across the square, it pairs naturally with Hagia Sophia and gives a balanced architectural contrast; late morning, ~45 minutes.

  4. Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi Selim Usta — Sultanahmet
Classic no-fuss Turkish lunch spot for köfte and ayran, about 400–700 TRY per person; lunch, ~1 hour.

  5. Arasta Bazaar — Sultanahmet
A compact, easier shopping stop than the bigger markets, good for browsing textiles and small souvenirs without much walking; afternoon, ~45 minutes.

  6. Tarihi Çınaraltı Börekçisi — Sirkeci
A solid stop for tea and börek near the old-city edge, perfect for a light evening snack before settling in, about 200–400 TRY per person; evening, ~30–45 minutes.

Morning

Start your day gently in Sultanahmet Square, which is really the best place to get your bearings in Istanbul after arrival: you can stand in the middle of the old-city core and see how the whole historic peninsula fits together. Walk slowly around the square, take in the German Fountain, the sprawl of the old imperial grounds, and the little side streets that peel off toward cafés and tram stops. If you’re coming by taxi, ask for Sultanahmet Meydanı; if you’re using the tram, the Sultanahmet stop on the T1 line drops you almost at the center. Early morning is usually calmer and much more pleasant for photos before the crowds arrive.

From there, head straight into Hagia Sophia while it’s still relatively quiet. It’s one of those places where the scale only really makes sense once you’re inside, so give yourself time to look up, circle slowly, and let the details sink in. Entry can involve a queue depending on the day and prayer times, so aim to arrive soon after opening; budget roughly 1.5 hours if you want to move at an unhurried pace. Just across the square, continue to the Blue Mosque, which is especially lovely for the contrast in feeling and design after Hagia Sophia. Remember to dress respectfully and expect brief pauses around prayer times; if you’re carrying a bag, keep it light, because the flow between the two sites is easiest when you’re not weighed down.

Lunch

For lunch, go to Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi Selim Usta, a classic old-school stop where the whole point is simple, well-made food done fast. Order the köfte with rice, maybe a side of piyaz, and definitely an ayran; it’s the kind of meal that suits a first day because it’s filling without being fussy. Prices tend to land around 400–700 TRY per person depending on what you add, and service is quick, so you won’t lose your afternoon to lunch. It’s close enough to keep the day flowing naturally, and you’ll avoid the tourist-trap chaos by sticking with a place locals and regular visitors still trust.

Afternoon Exploring

After lunch, wander over to Arasta Bazaar, which is much easier to enjoy than the larger, more overwhelming markets. It’s compact, shaded in parts, and ideal for browsing textiles, ceramics, small gifts, and embroidered souvenirs without committing to a full market expedition. Give yourself about 45 minutes here, maybe a little longer if you like to compare items or chat with shopkeepers. This is a good moment to slow down, sip something cold if you find a café nearby, and let the day feel less like sightseeing and more like settling into the city. If you’re tempted to shop, prices are usually negotiable, but keep it friendly and low-key; the experience is better that way.

Evening

Wrap up with tea and a light snack at Tarihi Çınaraltı Börekçisi in Sirkeci, which makes a very natural final stop before heading back to your hotel. It’s a good place for börek and Turkish tea without overdoing dinner, especially after a first day that already covers a lot of ground. Expect to spend about 200–400 TRY per person, and plan on 30–45 minutes here. From Sultanahmet, it’s an easy walk or a short tram ride to Sirkeci; if you’re returning later in the evening, taxis are straightforward but can be slower around the old-city traffic, so the tram is usually the least stressful option.
