Road Trips Rise and Japan Shines: Travelers Plot Diverse Journeys from Casper to Kyoto

Published March 25, 2026

Plantrip users mapped an eclectic 88 itineraries in the past 24 hours, with road trips across the American heartland and Japan-bound adventures leading the pack. From Maryland-to-Wyoming drives looping in Mount Rushmore to theme-park-centric stays in Osaka and Tokyo, travelers are favoring flexible routes and focused, experience-led days.

In the U.S., long-haul drives are trending. Multiple users planned Maryland-to-Casper, Wyoming routes, some in six days and others stretching to 18, with Mount Rushmore as a marquee stop. Midwest transit also stood out: several planners charted mechanicsburg, PA to Crystal Lake, IL runs, eyeing a safe, pet-friendly layover in Toledo with requests for unique restaurants, coffee shops, and secure neighborhoods. Shorter domestic breaks included a Route 66 sampler from Santa Monica to Phoenix, Washington, D.C. city days at the end of March, and quick escapes to Kodaikanal, Honavar, Munnar, and Mussoorie-Landour.

Japan saw robust interest across styles and regions. Osaka trips repeatedly featured USJ on day two and a Nara deer encounter, while Tokyo itineraries centered on neighborhood exploration, Asakusa stays, and daily Indian dinner options. Larger arcs connected Nagano–Kyoto–Tokyo via the Hokuriku Arch Pass, with locked-in theme park days at USJ (Apr 14) and Disneyland (Apr 17). Several long-form Japan requests called for 10–15 day blends including Mt. Fuji, Universal Studios, and Disney, reflecting a balance of culture and marquee attractions.

Europe bookings were broad and detailed. A comprehensive 10-day Belgium plan anchored in Brussels stacked day trips to Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp, and Leuven with landmarks like Gravensteen, St. Bavo’s Cathedral, the Belfry of Bruges, and the Atomium. Other runs sketched Barcelona–Monaco–Lisbon–Marbella hops, Denmark loops linking Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Roskilde (plus island time), camper-van routes across Denmark’s coastline, a two-week pan-European road trip, and a Gdańsk weekend (Apr 4–6) keyed to evening arrival and midday departure. Portugal planning centered on a Faro arrival with a car-based circuit to Lisbon, Porto, wineries with tasting rooms, gluten-free dining, toll pricing, and “real Portugal” stops off the tourist track.

Farther afield, planners set sights on Kilimanjaro plus safari in Tanzania, Peru for active and culinary culture over 18 days, Sri Lanka homestays with elephant parks in November, and multiple Toronto visits dated in August with precise flight times from Kenya. India remained busy with Kashmir for couples, Himachal and Leh-Ladakh multi-day hiking plans, peaceful Kangra retreats, Kerala two-weekers, budget Goa fortnights, and tightly timed pilgrimages to Om Parvat and Adi Kailash. Family-friendly Italy plans highlighted Rome’s essentials and a detour to Lake Garda for travelers with a toddler. Across the board, users favored simple, one-activity days, colder North India bases in early April, and practical touches like gluten-free options, pet policies, and neighborhood safety—signaling a shift toward intentional, comfort-first travel.
