Rail-and-Road Europe Itineraries Lead as Travelers Map Ambitious Multi‑Stop Trips

Published May 20, 2026

Plantrip users sketched 197 new itineraries in the last 24 hours, with Europe dominating thanks to complex rail-and-road combinations. The standout plan charts a December–January circuit from Madrid to Milan via Barcelona, Montpellier, the French Riviera, and Italy’s Amalfi Coast, before sprinting north by high-speed train to Florence, Milan, and a Venice day trip—blending car rentals with fast rail for efficiency during peak holiday travel.

That marquee itinerary begins December 26 in Madrid (MAD) with a drive to Barcelona, then a same-day AVE/TGV hop to Montpellier for the night. Travelers continue by car along the Côte d’Azur to Nice on December 27, switch to rail into Italy, and base December 28–January 2 in Positano via Salerno for coastal drives to Amalfi and Ravello, plus a history-focused loop to Pompeii and New Year’s Eve on the coast. On January 2, the route returns by car to Salerno, then zips to Florence by high-speed train for two nights of walking tours, before a January 4 rail leg to Milan for a three-night stay and a January 5 round-trip train excursion to Venice. Departure is January 7 from Milan (MXP or LIN) back to Madrid.

North America road trips also featured prominently. Multiple groups are plotting San Diego–Portland drives for early March 2027, prioritizing a coastal swing through San Francisco and time among California’s redwoods. Shorter regional escapes included Kelso–Mt. St. Helens–Astoria loops in the Pacific Northwest and Annapolis to Berlin, Maryland long-weekend plans, the latter weaving in weather-ready activities, bike rides on Assateague Island, Ocean City boardwalk strolls, and budget-friendly tastings and treats.

Asia interest is wide-ranging. Users planned Manila–Ho Chi Minh City weeklong city breaks and a June Hong Kong stay focused on value transit, Disney days, and a Macau side trip. Several India domestic itineraries concentrated on Jaipur family travel with vegetarian-friendly hotel bases and detailed day-by-day sightseeing windows. Jordan road trips from Riyadh appeared repeatedly, centered on Petra, the Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum’s heritage train experience, with adventure and water activities folded in.

Other European agendas trended cultural and outdoorsy: Austria itineraries anchored in Vienna with day trips; Denmark winter breaks aimed at Christmas ambience and student budgets; and multi-country Southern Europe drives linking Venice to the Dolomites, Lake Bled regattas, Budapest, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Split, and Trieste. Adventure-forward campers mapped Netherlands–Germany–Alps–Italy–Côte d’Azur routes with mountain biking near Salzburg, canyoning in the Soča Valley, and boat-and-dive days on Lakes Garda and Como, while ensuring late-July family time in Royan, France.
