Arrive at the B.R. Hills forest checkpost (forest office opens early) to register, obtain entry permits and book a forest guide/jeep if not pre-booked — guides and permits are required for treks/safaris inside the sanctuary. Confirm safari slot times (typically early morning and late afternoon/evening) before heading in.
Take a 2–3 hour guided trek along the temple plateau and nearby ridgelines to spot birds, endemic flora and fresh tracks; morning is the best time for wildlife and cooler conditions. Trails are moderate but can be rocky—wear good shoes and carry water; guides typically operate from 6:30am.
Refuel with a hearty local breakfast at your lodge or homestay in the BR Hills village — many places serve South Indian breakfasts from 7:00am onward; if arriving from a farther city, consider a packed breakfast. This is a good time to rest and rehydrate after the trek.
Explore the hilltop temple (typically open mornings 6:00–12:30 and evenings 4:00–8:00; verify local timings) and stroll the village to learn about local culture and hill agriculture — the temple area also offers panoramic viewpoints close to the village.
Enjoy a relaxed lunch of homestyle Karnataka/Nilgiri dishes at your eco-lodge or a trusted village eatery (most serve lunch from 12:00–14:00); try simple, filling local fare to prepare for the afternoon safari.
Join the forest jeep safari into the core BRT sanctuary (forest department / approved operators usually run afternoon drives from ~3:00pm); this is the best chance for larger mammal sightings (elephants, gaur) and to explore deeper forest areas inaccessible by foot. Book the jeep through forest office or your lodge — safari timing and availability vary, so confirm in advance.
After the safari, do a short 30–45 minute climb to a nearby viewpoint or ridge for sunset panoramas across the Nilgiri ranges — easy/moderate walk with excellent photo opportunities and cooler evening air. Viewpoint access depends on season and forest rules; follow your guide's directions.
Return to your lodge or local restaurant for dinner (most lodges serve dinner from 19:00); relax over a simple, warm meal and discuss sightings from the day. If you plan to travel onward after dinner, confirm transport options the previous evening.
If permitted and you have a forest escort, a short guided night walk (subject to forest rules) can reveal nocturnal wildlife and insects; otherwise use this time to rest and pack. Night activities require prior permission—do not go alone.
