Enter Sequoia National Park early to beat crowds and heat; the park road to Giant Forest opens 24/7 though visitor centers are seasonal. Arriving early gives you good parking options for the Sherman Tree and the Congress Trail.
Short paved loop to see the world’s largest tree by volume; it's an easy, iconic stop for photos and a quick interpretive walk. Best visited early for softer light and fewer people.
A 1.9–2.0 mile loop that passes many massive sequoias including the 'House' and 'Senate' groves — a gentle, immersive hike through the Giant Forest. The trail starts near the Sherman Tree parking and is open year-round (watch for icy conditions in winter).
Scenic drive along Generals Highway from Giant Forest toward the Lodgepole/Tokopah area; expect roughly 20–40 minutes depending on stops and traffic. Use this time to hydrate and prepare layers for the falls hike.
A moderately easy out-and-back (about 3.4 miles round trip) following the Kaweah River into Tokopah Valley to a 1200-foot cascaded waterfall; the trail is well maintained and open year-round (in winter icy sections possible). Plan for firm footwear and expect the best water flow in spring/early summer, though it’s a rewarding hike any season.
Eat a packed picnic at the Tokopah Falls trailhead or riverside (great scenic lunch) or grab a quick sandwich/snack at Lodgepole Market if you prefer a sit-down option. Market hours are seasonal — if you need breakfast or coffee earlier, plan to pick it up in Three Rivers before entry or at the park stores that open later.
USD10-25 (depending on picnic supplies or market purchase), 1h00m
Important: if you mean Panther Peak in the Mineral King area, that is a strenuous, long-distance day hike (many miles RT with significant elevation gain) and requires a long drive to the Mineral King trailhead — not realistic to combine with Sherman + Tokopah in one day. If you meant a smaller summit/viewpoint near Tokopah, clarify which one and I can route it; otherwise consider skipping Panther Peak and choosing Moro Rock or Crescent Meadow for shorter, scenic options.
Moro Rock is a short but steep stair climb to a spectacular panorama of the Great Western Divide (best in late afternoon light); Crescent Meadow is an easy boardwalk and meadow loop with a quieter giant sequoia experience. Both are near Giant Forest and fit into the same day, unlike a Panther Peak day-hike from Mineral King.
Drive out of the high country in time for a relaxed dinner; if you’re staying in the park, Wuksachi Lodge is nearby (dinner service seasonal). If exiting the park, Three Rivers has several dining options and services.
Wuksachi Lodge Dining Room offers lodge-style dinner near the Giant Forest (seasonal hours; check ahead), while The Gateway Restaurant in Three Rivers is a reliable option just outside the park for American fare — both are good choices after a long day of hiking.
End the day with a leisurely drive back to lodging or your next destination; if you plan another day in the park, rest and prepare for early starts. Park roads are open but may close seasonally overnight for maintenance — check current road status.
