Drive to the Paradise Peak trailhead and hike the short approach to the summit/viewpoint to watch sunrise over the Sierra; plan to arrive ~30–45 minutes before official sunrise so you have time to walk to the viewpoint and set up. Park in the Paradise Peak trailhead lot or designated turnout — parking is limited, so arrive early.
Short scenic drive to the Amphitheater Viewpoint pullout; this is a quick stop to photograph sweeping valley views and catch the morning light. Park in the roadside turnout or small viewpoint lot — use pullouts to avoid blocking the road.
Continue to Vista Point for another panorama — great for different angles of the ridgeline and to orient yourself on the route ahead. Park in the marked Vista Point parking area or turnout; short walk from the lot to the overlook.
Breakfast at Wuksachi Lodge dining or the Lodgepole Market & Deli to refuel; both offer quick breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and hot items. Note: lodge and market hours are seasonal — check current opening times on the park website or call the lodge before you go.
Drive to the Hanging Rock area and park in the Hanging Rock trailhead lot or nearest designated turnout; roads can be narrow so use the official parking areas. Hike the signed trail up to Hanging Rock for panoramic cliff-edge views of the surrounding forest and granite outcrops.
From the nearby Parker Group/Parker Grove trailhead (park in the designated Parker Group parking area), hike to the Parker Group sequoias — a concentrated cluster of large sequoias worth exploring up close. Trail is moderate; watch for roots and uneven ground. Bring water and sun protection.
Have a packed picnic at Parker Grove or drive a short distance to Crescent Meadow Picnic Area — both are scenic and family-friendly. There are no guaranteed food services in remote grove areas, so plan to bring lunch or confirm hours at the park concessions.
Park in the Crescent Meadow parking area and walk the short connector trail to the famous Tunnel Log (the fallen sequoia with a car-width tunnel). The log is an easy short walk and a great photo stop; the Crescent Meadow area also has short meadow loops if you want to extend the visit.
Use this time to revisit favorite viewpoints, take short meadow walks near Crescent Meadow, or rest before the evening drive. Visitor center hours vary — if you need information, check the Giant Forest or Grant Grove visitor center times on the NPS site before your trip.
Head toward the Tunnel Rock area for sunset viewing — drive carefully and allow extra time for narrow sections and slower vehicles. Park at the Tunnel Rock turnout or nearby designated parking (use the official pullout) and walk a short distance to the viewpoint to settle in before golden hour.
Watch sunset from Tunnel Rock — a dramatic end to the day as the low light highlights granite and giant sequoias. Sunset times vary by date; in mid-August expect sunset around 7:50–8:10pm — plan to arrive 20–30 minutes early.
If open, dine at The Peaks Restaurant at Wuksachi Lodge (check seasonal hours) or enjoy a packed dinner near your vehicle/campsite. Many concession dining hours change seasonally — confirm availability and closing times in advance.
Finish the loop and return to your lodging or campsite; allow time for slow, winding roads and wildlife on the highway after dark. The park is open 24/7, but facilities vary in hours — plan overnight accommodations or camping in advance.
