Day 1: Sunrise at Moro Rock & Giant Forest Exploration

Morning

Start early on Highway 198 and pull off at the Moro Rock Trailhead just before sunrise. The short climb to the Moro Rock summit offers spectacular sunrise views over the Sierra Nevada, and the 30‑minute hike sets a lively tone for the day.

Afternoon

Drive to the Giant Forest area via Highway 198, turning onto General Grant Tree Road and parking at the Giant Forest Museum Lot. From there, explore the General Sherman Tree and follow the Big Trees Trail to the historic Congress Trail, visiting the iconic Chimney Tree and Lincoln Tree along the route. A short detour onto the High Sierra Trail from the Crescent Meadow parking area adds a high‑elevation glimpse of the Sierra’s alpine landscape.

Evening

Drive further south on Highway 198, then turn onto Cedar Grove Road (CA‑180) and park at the Cedar Grove Picnic Area in Kings Canyon. The gentle, riverside path leads to an ideal sunset spot at the Cedar Grove meadow, where the sun paints the canyon walls with golden light before you head back.
