Early departure to maximise daylight for the long drive toward the Spiti approach road. Expect mountain roads and possible slow stretches; drive carefully.
Decide whether to book a guesthouse in a roadside town (safer, comfortable) or continue to a scenic campsite at/near Yulla Kanda for overnight tenting. If you want to tent, allow time to set up and acclimatise.
Morning trek to the Yulla Kanda summit/ viewpoint — a short-to-moderate trek; good for sunrise views and acclimatisation. Confirm local guide availability and exact trailhead; typical opening/access is dawn until late afternoon.
Drive toward Nako village; roads improve/worsen depending on season — scenic passes and river valleys en route. If this feels too hectic, split the drive and stay overnight at an intermediate town.
Walk the shoreline and village of Nako; the lake and village have stunning reflections and traditional mud-brick houses — easy stroll, open all day but mornings are calm and photogenic.
Short drive to Gue to see the well-preserved mummy of a lama (Gue Mummy). The site is a cultural oddity and worth a brief visit — access can be remote, open during daylight hours.
Visit Dhankar (Dhankhar) Monastery perched above a dramatic canyon; the gompa and museum showcase Spiti history and offer lookout views. Typically open 8:00am–5:00pm; allow time to climb to the gompa.
Arrive Tabo and check into a guesthouse; if time allows visit Tabo Monastery complex (famous 1000-year-old murals) — open roughly 8:00am–5:30pm, but verifying local schedule is recommended.
Explore the small Kaza bazaar, buy snacks, solar chargers or warm clothing; have a light lunch at a popular local cafe/guesthouse to try Tibetan dishes.
If you prefer to visit Key Monastery now, drive ~45–60 minutes each way — monastic museum and panoramic views. Typically open 8:00am–5:00pm; avoid late visits when the monastery may be closed.
Dinner at a recommended guesthouse or small restaurant — seek a place that serves hot soup, thukpa, momos and local barley dishes. Kaza gets cold after sunset.
Visit Hikkim to post a postcard from one of the world’s highest post offices and see the tiny village atmosphere; post office typically open mornings but check local hours.
Start very early (pre-dawn) to cross Kunzum Pass on time and reach Chandratal; pass conditions and permits can affect timing. Ensure full tank, spare fuel and 4x4 capability or hire from Kaza.
Reach Chandratal and check into a campground / tent set-up (seasonal camps are open in summer months). Walk around the lake, it's one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes.
Simple hot lunch prepared at camp; afternoon at leisure for lakeside walks and photos. Note that facilities are basic — carry cash, warm clothing and toiletries.
Explore the lakeshore and nearby ridges for panoramic views — late afternoon light is excellent for photography. No strict opening times but daylight only for safety.
Return over Kunzum Pass. If heading toward Manali, you will re-descend; if returning to Kaza, arrive late morning/early afternoon depending on road and stops.
If you return to Kaza, use the afternoon to rest, pack or prepare for onward travel; if continuing to Manali, this will be a long drive and likely need an overnight en route.
