5-Day Itinerary for Khajuraho, Orcha, Jhansi, Gwalior in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Khajuraho
    10 minutes (3.5 km) from Khajuraho Airport

    Start your day at Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its stunning temples that are over 1,000 years old. Visit the Kandariya Mahadev temple, the largest and most beautifully carved temple in Khajuraho. In the afternoon, explore the Jain temples, which have intricately carved figures depicting Jain mythology. End your day with the Sound and Light show at the Western Group of Temples, which brings the history of the temples to life.

  2. Day 2: Orcha
    4 hours (170 km) from Khajuraho

    Take a morning drive to Orcha, a charming town on the banks of the Betwa River. Visit the Jahangir Mahal, a palace built by Raja Bir Singh Deo in the 17th century, and the nearby Raj Mahal, which has beautiful murals and paintings. In the afternoon, visit the Chaturbhuj Temple, a stunning temple with a soaring roof and ornate carvings. End your day with a stroll through the local bazaar and try some of the delicious street food.

  3. Day 3: Jhansi
    30 minutes (18 km) from Orcha

    Start your day with a visit to the Jhansi Fort, which played a significant role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Explore the palace and museum inside the fort, which has a collection of weapons and art from the Bundela dynasty. In the afternoon, visit the Rani Mahal, a beautiful palace with intricate architecture and colourful murals. End your day by watching the Sound and Light show at the fort, which recounts the history of Jhansi.

  4. Day 4: Gwalior
    3 hours (120 km) from Jhansi

    Take a morning drive to Gwalior, a city famous for its grand fort and palaces. Visit the Gwalior Fort, which has a stunning view of the city and houses several temples and palaces. In the afternoon, visit the Jai Vilas Palace, a grand palace built by the Scindia dynasty. End your day with a visit to the Tansen Tomb, which pays homage to the legendary musician Tansen who was a part of Emperor Akbar's court.

  5. Day 5: Gwalior
    20 minutes (7 km) from Gwalior Airport

    Start your day with a visit to the Sun Temple, a unique temple designed to resemble a chariot. In the afternoon, visit the Sas Bahu Temple, a pair of temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. End your day with a visit to the Gopachal Parvat, a cluster of Jain temples carved into a hillside with stunning views of the city.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the nearby cities of Datia and Shivpuri, which are both known for their stunning palaces and temples. You can also take a day trip to the nearby wildlife sanctuaries of Panna and Madhav National Park. To maximize your fun, try some of the local delicacies such as chaat, bhutte ki kees, and lassi. You can also attend the annual Khajuraho Dance Festival, which takes place in February and showcases classical Indian dance forms. Finally, don't forget to shop for local handicrafts such as Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees, leather goods, and brassware.
