Start early to avoid city traffic and make good progress; the Pune→Surat drive is about 4.5–5.5 hours (approx 300 km) on NH48. Pack water, snacks and a first-aid kit for the family.
By evening the food stalls and markets come alive; perfect for street-food tasting and picking up handicrafts. (Note: Manek Chowk’s main night market is best after 8pm.)
City Palace open ~9:30–5:30; the palace complex is photogenic and family-friendly. Take a 30–45 minute public boat on Lake Pichola (boats typically run until ~6:00pm) for excellent views.
Iconic hilltop fort with palaces and courtyards; open roughly 8:00/9:00–4:30/5:00 (check seasonal hours). Arrive early to avoid heat and crowds; elephant rides available but many families prefer jeep or walking.
City Palace museum (approx 9:30–17:00) showcases royal collections; Jantar Mantar (observatory) is next door and open similar hours—great for curious kids.
Ethnic village resort offering Rajasthani food, folk dance, and activities; open evenings (~12:00–22:30). Ideal for family entertainment though slightly touristy.
Jaswant Thada is a white marble cenotaph close to the fort (great for photos at golden hour), and the Clock Tower / Sardar Market is lively for shopping.
Fort (Sonar Quila) is a living fort with shops and temples; open ~9:00–18:00. Patwon Ki Haveli (cluster of ornate havelis) shows local architecture—both are easy to explore with family.
Most desert camps provide hotel pickup between 3:00–4:30pm for a camel ride to the dunes and sunset program; confirm pickup time when booking. Camp includes cultural performances and dinner.
Traditional Rajasthani dinner and folk-dance performance in the camp—very memorable for families. Overnight in a comfortable desert tent (basic to luxury depending on booking).
Drive back toward Jodhpur (~5–6 hours). This positions you better for the return leg toward Pune the following day and breaks the long return distance.
By road this is a long haul (~14–18+ hours, ~1,000–1,200+ km depending on route). For a family of 3 we strongly recommend splitting into two driving days or booking a one-way flight/train from Jodhpur or nearby city to Pune to avoid exhaustion.
If you push through you may reach Pune late evening. We recommend booking an overnight stop (e.g., Surat or Vadodara) mid-route if traveling by road, especially with children, to arrive rested next morning.
Final dinner either at your Pune residence or hotel; light meal and rest after a long travel day. If you choose the flight alternative, dinner can be enjoyed in Pune after a relaxed transfer from the airport.
