Day 1: Drive & Settle
Reliance, Tennessee, USA (via stops) on September 1, 2025
Leave early to make the day of driving comfortable and allow time for multiple stops; plan for roughly 7–9 hours total driving with breaks. Bring a cooler, leash, water for your dog and back-friendly lumbar support for the car.
Stop at a Buc-ee’s along the route for fuel, clean restrooms, dog relief areas, and grab-and-go breakfasts (breakfast sandwiches, kolaches, coffee); many Buc-ee’s stores operate 24/7 but confirm local hours before travel.
Quick 15–30 minute leg-stretch and leash walk at a designated rest area or small roadside park to let your dog relieve itself and to do gentle back stretches.
Choose a relaxed lunch spot off the interstate — options include a casual diner, family restaurant, or a park picnic if weather permits. Aim for a protein-and-veg focused meal to keep energy steady and avoid heavy stomachs during the drive.
Take a 20–40 minute stop at a small state park, riverfront promenade or scenic overlook for a calm, flat walk (low impact for a back injury) and photo break. Most parks offer easy, short loops open during daylight hours.
Short comfort stop before the final drive into Reliance so everyone arrives refreshed. Use this break to load the cabin directions and confirm check-in instructions.
Official check-in at 4:00 PM. Unpack, check cabin systems (hot tub, kitchen), note dog rules and the best place to leash your dog for nights/outdoor time. Walk the immediate property to let your dog explore the new space.
A gentle, mostly flat rail-trail along the Hiwassee River — perfect for loosening up after driving without straining your back. Trail access is generally open dawn–dusk and is dog-friendly on leash.
Use the full kitchen for an easy, restful dinner: consider a sheet-pan chicken and veggies or pasta with a salad to minimize effort and maximize rest for your back. Cooking in lets you keep the dog comfortable and avoid late drives.
Soak briefly (15–25 minutes) in the cabin hot tub to ease travel stiffness — keep sessions short if your physician recommends limitations for your back. Enjoy an early bedtime after a long travel day.
Simple in-cabin breakfast (yogurt, fruit, toast) or pick up fresh pastries/coffee locally; pack water and snacks for the day and any dog supplies you’ll need for walks. Local markets generally open early (check individual hours).
Return to the rail-trail for a low-grade, 1–2 mile out-and-back, ideal for experiencing river scenery without steep grades; open dawn–dusk and dog-friendly on leash.
Scenic drive toward Bald River Gorge; parking at the falls provides a short paved access to the main viewing platform, minimizing walking while delivering a big payoff of waterfall views. Access is available during daylight hours.
A stunning ~90-foot waterfall visible from a short paved spur and sturdy viewing area — one of the best low-effort waterfall experiences in the region. The area is open during daylight hours; bring a jacket if it’s misty.
Enjoy a packed sandwich or chef-prepared picnic from the cabin at a nearby picnic site — minimal walking and a scenic meal near the water. Watch for tick safety and keep your dog leashed.
Visit the Ocoee Whitewater Center for flat, easy trails and river viewing; the visitor center is typically open ~9:00 AM–5:00 PM while grounds are usable dawn–dusk. Great place to watch kayakers and enjoy river scenery without strenuous hiking.
Drive 10–25 minutes to Copperhill/McCaysville or Benton for a casual meal (check restaurant hours; many are open into the evening). Alternatively, a low-effort cabin-cooked meal is ideal after a full day.
Drive the Cherohala Skyway with frequent pull-offs for panoramic mountain views — you’ll experience high-elevation scenery with minimal walking; the Skyway is best enjoyed during daylight hours for safe viewing.
Take a short, flat riverside walk to enjoy water views and minimal exertion — this is dog-friendly on leash and easy on the back. Daylight hours recommended.
Leisurely stroll and window-shop along the riverfront sidewalks of the twin towns; plenty of level walking and benches for frequent rests. Many shops close in early evening so plan accordingly.
Either prepare a comforting cabin meal (grilled fish, roasted veggies) or try a nearby diner for an easy, familiar dinner; keep portions moderate to help sleep and recovery.
Return to the Whitewater Center for exhibits and flat spectator trails; visitor center hours generally around 9:00 AM–5:00 PM while grounds are dawn–dusk. Great for photos and short, easy walks.
Consider a mellow guided float or a short half-day trout fishing trip on the Hiwassee — many outfitters provide calm river options; verify dog policy and that the activity will be low-impact on your back before booking (outfitters require reservations).
If up for a short drive, enjoy a nicer meal in Copperhill/McCaysville or Benton (check local restaurant hours/reservations) or make a special dinner in-cabin to relax and celebrate the trip.
Finish with a final brief, flat walk near the cabin and begin light packing for a 11:00 AM checkout the next day; keep evening movement gentle and back-friendly.
Easy breakfast at the cabin (leftovers, toast, coffee) and a final short riverside dog walk to stretch before hitting the road. Finish packing and tidy the kitchen per cabin rules.
One last gentle stroll on the Hiwassee River Rail Trail — low-impact and flat, perfect for loosening up before the drive. Trails are open dawn–dusk; keep your dog leashed.
Check out at 11:00 AM and begin your northbound drive. Plan multiple stops for dog breaks and back-friendly stretches to avoid long continuous driving stretches.
Stop for lunch at a comfortable, dog-friendly restaurant or picnic area roughly 1–2 hours into the drive; choose a place with outdoor seating for the dog and level ground for frequent rests.
Visit a Buc-ee’s on the return route for snacks, restroom breaks and a pet-relief area; many Buc-ee’s operate 24/7 but check the hours of the specific location you plan to use.
Estimated arrival back home depending on stops and traffic. Unpack slowly, check your dog for ticks/irritations from the trip and do gentle stretches for your back.
