Quick, reliable specialty-coffee and breakfast sandwiches to start before departure; Jubala typically opens early and is perfect for a drive-out breakfast. If pressed for time, pick up a sandwich/coffee to go so you can leave exactly at 8:00am.
Leave Raleigh on I-40/I-85 then US-221 (or preferred GPS route) to reach Linville Falls — this gives a taste of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s northern stretch and saves time vs. driving the entire parkway.
Short, scenic loop hikes to multiple overlooks of Linville Falls — one of the best roadside waterfalls on the Parkway. Trails and overlooks are open sunrise–sunset; the hike gives a waterfall experience without a long detour.
Either enjoy a packed picnic at the Linville Falls picnic area (fast, scenic) or drive 20–25 minutes to Blowing Rock for a café lunch (Blue Moon Café or a local deli) — cafés in Blowing Rock typically serve through early afternoon on weekdays.
Re-enter the Parkway and take a curated scenic run north toward its northern terminus (Afton/Rockfish Gap). Stop for a couple quick overlooks en route — the Parkway is open 24/7 but overlooks are best in daylight.
At the Blue Ridge Parkway’s connection point (Rockfish Gap/Afton) take a short, scenic northbound stretch on Skyline Drive inside Shenandoah National Park for mountain overlooks and a classic Skyline ridge drive. Note: Shenandoah charges an entrance fee per vehicle (valid 7 days). Visitor centers are typically 9am–5pm if you need maps or the restrooms.
Quick paddle at Sherando Lake (a short drive off Afton) or a nearby calm river access point for a 30–60 minute kayak to stretch legs and enjoy water time; many outfitters in the Waynesboro/Luray area rent kayaks — typical rental windows are ~9am–5pm, so book ahead or bring your own. Recreation areas are daylight-only and often have small day-use fees.
Head out from the Rockfish Gap / Waynesboro area onto I-81/I-70 or I-95 route toward Baltimore; expect roughly 3.0–3.5 hours depending on traffic. This is the longest driving leg — aim to leave by 5:00pm to reach Baltimore near 8:00pm if traffic is light.
Arrive in Baltimore and enjoy seafood at Thames Street Oyster House in Fells Point (great oyster/raw bar options and typically open late). If you prefer something quicker, Fells Point and Inner Harbor have many taverns and pizza spots that stay open late.
Check in to your Baltimore lodging or enjoy an evening stroll along Fells Point/Inner Harbor. Many city bars and restaurants remain open past dinner time.
