Arrive in Leh, check into your guesthouse/hotel and rest — the priority is acclimatisation at ~3,500m to avoid AMS. Keep activity light for the day and hydrate well.
Pick up your hired mountain/touring bike or collect rental gear; test brakes, gears and lights and get a quick tune — many rental shops open by 10:00am. Essential before the high passes.
Light warm-up ride to Shanti Stupa (open sunrise–sunset) and view Leh Palace from below; great for orientation and gentle exercise while acclimatising.
Traditional Ladakhi and Tibetan dishes in Leh — both restaurants are popular with riders and open into the evening (~8:00am–10:00pm). Good for nourishing food before a long ride day.
Early hotel breakfast and leave Leh for Khardung La; starting early helps with traffic and weather on the pass. Expect colder temperatures on the pass.
Cross Khardung La (around 5,359m) — iconic high pass on the road to Nubra; check local road status (pass can close in bad weather) and allow time for photos and warming breaks.
Local dinner (barley, thukpa, momos) — simple Ladakhi cuisine to keep you warm. Kitchen hours often depend on the guesthouse but typically 7:00pm–9:00pm.
Breakfast and drop the bike for a quick service (oil check, brakes, tyres) so it's ready for high-altitude stretches later in the trip; most shops open ~9:00am.
Ride to Shey (former royal palace) and Thiksey Monastery (open ~9:00am–5:00pm) for classic Ladakhi monasteries and panoramic valley views — gentle distances for recovery.
Obtain/confirm permits (Inner Line/PAP where required) and re-check route/road reports for Umling La/Hanle; many permit counters and travel agents in Leh open 9:00am–5:00pm.
Very early packed breakfast and depart for the long, remote ride southeast toward Nyoma and Umling La; expect high-altitude and long stretches of rough road.
Cross Umling La (one of the world’s highest motorable passes; accessibility is seasonal—usually May–Oct). Daylight-only access; stop for photos and savour the dramatic high-altitude plateau.
Arrive in Hanle village late afternoon/early evening; accommodation is basic (guesthouse or homestay). This is remote high-altitude country—rest and hydrate.
Dinner at the guesthouse; Hanle is an excellent stargazing location due to low light pollution — note that the Indian Astronomical Observatory is not open to the general public without prior permission, but the night sky here is spectacular.
Evening meal followed by informal stargazing from the village — remember to carry warm clothing and a thermos; the observatory requires permission for visits.
Visit Korzok Gompa (open ~9:00am–5:00pm) for its cliff-top location above Tso Moriri and to experience local culture and monk-run guesthouse refreshments.
Gentle lakeside walks for birdwatching (bar-headed geese, great crested grebe) and enjoying the high-altitude wetland environment—best in late afternoon light.
Visit Tso Kar salt lake and nearby vegetation-rich 'village' of Mahe for lunch — a stark contrast of salt flats and wetlands, prime for birdlife and photos.
Easy morning with a short local ride or, if you want to re-ride Khardung La for photos and a final high-pass experience, plan an early start; check current pass status before leaving.
Time for souvenirs (pashmina scarves, juniper incense, apricot products) and pack bikes/gear for return; Leh market shops generally open 9:00am–6:00pm.
