Get to your hotel/guesthouse, drop luggage and rest. Katra is the base town for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage; staying close to Main Bazaar or the bus/railway station reduces extra transfers.
Eat a light, wholesome lunch to fuel the trek day; many hotels offer packed tiffin if you plan an early start. Bhawan langar (free/voluntary donation) is available at the shrine area on darshan day if you prefer temple meals later.
Complete any pending e-registration/check-in at the Yatra counters (if needed), buy walking sticks, rain poncho, bottled water and energy snacks from Main Bazaar; this saves time the next morning. Online registration is recommended; counters in Katra operate mainly during daytime (approx 8:00am–6:00pm).
Stroll the Katra Main Bazaar to pick up trekking essentials (comfortable shoes, woolen layer if cool, sunscreen) and buy puja items or prasad; it’s a good low-effort walk to loosen legs before the trek.
Have an early, easily digestible dinner (dal, rice/roti, sabzi) at a clean vegetarian restaurant in Katra so you can sleep early; request a packed early breakfast/tiffin from the hotel if you plan to start before hotel breakfast hours.
Pack essentials for the day (ID, Aadhaar if needed, charged phone power bank, personal medicines, light sweater, water, snacks). Aim for early sleep to start fresh pre-dawn.
Take a light packed breakfast (tea, biscuits/fruit/packed paratha) supplied by the hotel or bought the night before; many hotels will provide early tiffins on request because standard hotel breakfast hours start later.
Begin the pilgrimage on foot from Katra (the trek is roughly 12–13 km one-way along a paved/stone path). Early start reduces crowd and heat; alternatives: pony/palki or helicopter if you prefer — pony/palki/helicopter operate mainly in daylight and subject to availability and weather.
Vaishno Devi shrine (the holy cave temple) welcomes pilgrims throughout the day (the shrine traditionally remains open 24/7), but darshan queues vary widely; expect anywhere from 1–4+ hours depending on crowd conditions. Allow extra time for security checks and queue management.
Collect the customary prasad; free langar/community meals operate in and near the Bhawan area at intervals — a practical, simple lunch option after darshan.
If time and energy permit, visit nearby spots: Banganga (a holy spring on the trek path) and Ardhkuwari cave (a short steep climb further up) or plan Bhairo Baba shrine visit (often required for darshan completion); these are spiritual and scenic stops but can add time — check on-site accessibility and queue at Bhairo Baba, which can be busy during peak season.
Start return descent to Katra on foot (downhill is faster but still tiring) or choose a paid transfer option: pony/palki (shared/private) or helicopter (only on certain legs) — helicopter flights typically operate in daylight hours (approx 7:00am–5:00pm) and are weather dependent; pony/palki services operate during daylight (approx 6:00am–6:00pm).
Return to your hotel, freshen up and have a comforting dinner — choose light, protein-rich food to recover (dal, paneer, vegetable sabzi, rice/roti). Many Katra restaurants are open until late evening (approx 7:00pm–10:00pm).
Rest for the night if you plan to leave next morning, or finalize travel arrangements (train/bus/flight bookings to Jammu or onward). If you plan to depart late-night or next day, reconfirm transport times and travel to Jammu (Jammu Airport/railhead are ~50–60 km from Katra).
