Pack water (at least 2 litres per person), high-energy snacks, suncream, sunglasses, hat, light layers plus a warm jacket for the mountain (Jebel Akhdar is several degrees cooler). Carry ID, cash (OMR), and any 4x4 rental paperwork or driver contact. Check vehicle fuel and tyre pressure; mobile signal can be patchy in the mountains.
Leave Muscat heading to Nizwa — the drive is scenic and typically takes about 1h45m–2h depending on traffic. Aim for steady driving; there are petrol stations en route. If you are already in Nizwa, start your day here and skip the drive.
Visit the beautifully restored 17th-century Jabrin Castle, known for its painted ceilings and cool stone rooms — great to start the day with a guided or self-guided tour. Typical opening hours: 08:00–17:00; check the current schedule before you go.
Quick photo stop at Bahla Fort (a UNESCO site exterior and restored parts). The fort is large; if you have time you can enter the museum sections (usually open 08:00–17:00). Plan for a short walk and photos — the mud-brick walls are dramatic in morning light.
Stroll Nizwa Souq to see silver jewellery, khanjars, spices and pottery. For breakfast try a local coffee shop in the souq and order Omani kahwa with halwa and a manakeesh or flatbread. Souq shops typically open from 08:30–19:00 but may close briefly for prayer / midday, so go mid-morning.
Climb Nizwa Fort’s circular tower for panoramic views over the date palms and souq; the fort explains Nizwa’s role in Omani history. Typical opening hours: 08:00–17:00 (sometimes with a short midday closure); allow time to absorb exhibits and climb the steep stairways.
Eat at a trusted local spot in Nizwa — try traditional Omani lunch (shuwa is special but may require advance order; otherwise go for mixed rice, grilled fish or kebabs). Recommended: a souq restaurant or 'Sahari / local mandi house' near the fort for authentic flavours. Typical lunch cost ~OMR6–12 per person; many places open 11:00–15:00.
Finish any souq shopping (silver, incense, dates) and use the shade to rest before the mountain drive. Ensure you refill water and buy snacks for the Jebel Akhdar section, where amenities are limited.
Set off from Nizwa to climb the Al Hajar Mountains to Saiq Plateau (Jebel Akhdar). The drive is steep and winding — a 4x4 is recommended; check in advance whether your vehicle is permitted and whether there are roadworks. Driving time ~1h15m–1h45m depending on stops.
Visit Diana’s Point viewpoint for dramatic views down the gorge and across terraced farms; make short viewpoint stops for photos. The plateau is at high elevation and noticeably cooler — expect 5–10°C lower temperature than Nizwa. There is no entrance fee for viewpoints.
Take easy 20–60 minute walks on marked tracks near Saiq village or visit terraced farms and stone-built villages (Wadi Bani Habib). These walks are moderate; wear sturdy shoes and a jacket. If you want a longer hike (2–3 hours) choose an established trail and leave earlier.
Stop for tea/coffee and a light snack at a mountain café or hotel terrace (Alila Jabal Akhdar has a public café/restaurant area). The mountain air is fresh and perfect for watching late-afternoon light.
Head to a panoramic viewpoint to watch sunset over the Hajar ridges. Sunset time in early September around 6:30–6:45pm — arrive early to secure parking and best views. Temperatures drop quickly after sunset; wear a warm layer.
Enjoy dinner at Alila Jabal Akhdar’s restaurant (advance reservation strongly recommended). The menu offers modern Omani and international dishes with mountain views — perfect after a long day. Hotel restaurants typically serve dinner from 19:00; expect OMR15–30 per person for a main and drink.
If you prefer a quicker/cheaper option, eat at a local mountain café or bring a packed dinner from Nizwa (sandwiches, salads) and eat at a viewpoint picnic area. This is useful if hotel reservations are full or you prefer to descend sooner.
Decide whether to return to Muscat (drive ~2h–2h30m) or overnight in Nizwa (shorter drive). Night driving in the mountains requires caution — watch for narrow bends and limited lighting. If returning to Muscat, expect arrival around 10:30–11:00pm; if staying in Nizwa, arrive ~9:00pm.
If you return to Muscat you will arrive late evening; rest and hydrate. If staying in Nizwa or on the mountain, check into your hotel and dry out damp layers. Charge devices and prepare for the next day’s travel.
