7-Day Itinerary for Assam in October 2023

  1. Day 1: Kamakhya Temple
    25 minutes (9.7 km) from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport

    Visit the revered Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati in the morning. The temple is a symbol of female power, and a popular destination for devotees, historians and photographers alike. Afternoon, visit the nearby Assam State Museum, showcasing the history and culture of the state, and end the day at the Nehru Park, in the heart of the city.

  2. Day 2: Manas National Park
    4 hours 30 minutes (142 km) from Guwahati

    Get up early and head to Manas National Park, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. Spend the morning exploring the park's flora and fauna, including tigers, rhinos and elephants. Take a jeep safari, and learn about the park's conservation efforts. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Manas Maozigendri Eco-Tourism Society for a taste of the local Bodo culture.

  3. Day 3: Kaziranga National Park
    4 hours 30 minutes (217 km) from Manas National Park

    Head to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to the one-horned Indian rhinoceros. Take a morning safari amidst the tall elephant grass, and lookout for deer, tigers, and various birds. Afternoon, visit the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park, showcasing the local flora, and the nearby Panbari Reserve Forest, a popular picnic spot.

  4. Day 4: Sivasagar
    5 hours 15 minutes (213 km) from Kaziranga National Park

    Visit Sivasagar, once the capital of the Ahom Dynasty, and home to several ancient monuments. Start with the Sivasagar Tank, a popular boating and picnic spot, and visit the Rang Ghar, an amphitheatre used for cultural events in the past. Afternoon, head to the Talatal Ghar, a palace made of baked bricks, and end the day with a visit to the Joysagar Tank, a manmade lake with several temples around it.

  5. Day 5: Majuli Island
    4 hours 30 minutes (142 km) from Sivasagar

    Take a ferry to Majuli Island, the world's largest river island, and a cultural hotspot. Spend the morning exploring the island's several satras, or Vaishnavite monasteries, and learn about the Neo-Vaishnavite movement. Afternoon, visit the Kamalabari Satra, a centre for mask-making, and end the day with a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra River.

  6. Day 6: Jorhat
    2 hours 15 minutes (91 km) from Majuli Island

    Visit Jorhat, the cultural and commercial hub of Assam. Start with the Kaziranga Golf Resort, and play a round of golf amidst the tea gardens. Then head to the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, home to some of the rarest primates in the world. Afternoon, visit the Thengal Bhawan, a historic mansion showcasing the Ahom architecture, and end the day with a sunset at the Sukapha Samannay Kshetra, a popular picnic spot.

  7. Day 7: Guwahati
    5 hours (303 km) from Jorhat

    Return to Guwahati, and visit the Umananda Temple, a Shiva temple on a river island in the Brahmaputra River. Then head to the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, a cultural museum and auditorium, for a glimpse into the state's art and culture. Afternoon, visit the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the highest density of one-horned rhinos, and end the day with a river cruise on the Brahmaputra.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the Nameri National Park, the Hoollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Digboi Oil Refinery. Take a tea tour in Jorhat, and try some of the world famous Assam tea. You can also take a day trip to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, and visit the Umiam Lake and the Elephant Falls.
