Two-day Itinerary for Banaras in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Kashi Vishwanath Temple
    10 minutes (2.6 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    Begin your day by visiting the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu temples. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. You can participate in the morning aarti which takes place at 3:00 AM in the summer season and 4:00 AM in the winter season. After the aarti, explore the temple complex and witness the beautiful architecture of the temple. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride on the Ganges and witness the famous Ganga Aarti which takes place every evening at the Dashashwamedh Ghat. In the evening, visit the Ramnagar Fort, which is a beautiful fort located on the banks of the Ganges. The museum inside the fort has a collection of vintage cars, armor, and weapons used by the royal family of Varanasi.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath and Banaras Hindu University
    20 minutes (10.6 km) from Kashi Vishwanath Temple

    Start your day by visiting Sarnath, a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site. It is believed that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. You can explore the various stupas, ruins, and monuments at the site. After Sarnath, head to Banaras Hindu University, one of the largest residential universities in Asia. The campus is spread over 1,300 acres and has beautiful architecture. Visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum which has a collection of paintings, textiles, and sculptures from various parts of India. In the evening, visit the Assi Ghat which is one of the most famous ghats in Varanasi. Enjoy a boat ride and witness the beautiful sunset at the ghat.

Recommendations

If you have more time in Varanasi, you can consider visiting the Dhamekh Stupa, Chunar Fort, and the Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary. You can also take a side trip to Allahabad to witness the famous Kumbh Mela which takes place once every 12 years. To maximize your fun, try the local street food which is famous for its chaat, lassi, and sweets. Don't forget to bargain while shopping in the local markets. Lastly, immerse yourself in the culture of Varanasi by attending a classical music or dance performance which takes place throughout the city.
