Arrive at Mysore Railway/Bus Station and take a short taxi/auto (10–20 minutes) to the Mysore Palace area to start your sightseeing efficiently. This places you in the heart of the city and near lunch options.
The iconic Mysore Palace is the must-see — ornate architecture, durbar halls and royal history. It’s usually open 10:00–17:30 (check for any special closures or event schedules).
A classic Mysore lunch choice: Vinayaka Mylari is famed for its soft dosas and ghee roast — simple, quick and very local. Typically open all day from morning to late evening (approx 7:00–21:00); peak lunchtime can be busy.
If you want a coffee or filter coffee after lunch, choose a nearby café or the palace-area coffee stalls for a 15–20 minute break before continuing. Many small cafés are open from morning until late evening.
A short walk from the palace, this gallery houses traditional and modern Indian paintings, including Mysore school art; generally open 10:00–17:00. Great for Indian art and quieter than the main palace.
A colourful, bustling market near the palace where you can see local life and buy spices, flowers and handicrafts — open early morning until around 19:30–20:00. A perfect place for photography and to taste street snacks.
Taste Mysore’s signature sweet: Mysore Pak. Buy a small piece from a trusted sweet shop such as Guru Sweets or other well-known sweet stalls near Devaraja Market. Shops generally open 8:00–20:00.
Drive (or take a taxi/auto) up Chamundi Hill to see the big monolithic Nandi and Chamundeshwari Temple views over Mysore. The temple is usually open 06:00–19:00 (timings can vary), and the drive takes ~20–30 minutes each way from city centre.
If time and opening hours permit (often open until ~18:00), visit St. Philomena’s Cathedral to see its neo-gothic architecture; if it’s closed, enjoy the exterior and nearby streets. Many churches have variable visiting hours, so check on arrival.
Option A — Return to Vinayaka Mylari if you loved the dosas; Option B — Hotel RRR or a local restaurant for a quick south-Indian thali or biryani near the station; Option C — café/restaurant near the station for lighter western-style plates. Most sit-down restaurants are open until 21:00–22:00.
If you have time before your departure, pick up packaged Mysore Pak, coffee, or souvenirs near the station or revisit a favourite street stall for a final snack. Many shops near the station stay open until 20:00–20:30.
