Meet your driver at Bandaranaike International Airport (or your Katunayake hotel) and drive via A3/A6 toward Dambulla; this is the most direct route to the Cultural Triangle and sets you up to visit Sigiriya with minimal backtracking.
A UNESCO World Heritage cave temple complex with impressive Buddha statues and vivid murals — visit to stretch your legs and learn about regional Buddhist art. (Open daily 7:00am–7:00pm.)
Enjoy a hearty Sri Lankan rice-and-curry or a mixed Western/local menu at a trusted hotel restaurant in Sigiriya/Habarana — a good midway break before the climb.
Climb the iconic fifth-century rock fortress for the world-famous frescoes, water gardens, and panoramic views from the summit; it’s a must-see for history and photography. (Open daily 7:00am–5:30pm; wear good shoes and bring water.)
Short hike up Pidurangala for arguably the best, unobstructed viewpoint of Sigiriya Rock at close range — excellent for late-afternoon light and sunset (open 6:00am–6:00pm).
Check in to your chosen hotel (many offer garden/pool views). For dinner, try the hotel’s main restaurant or a recommended local place for fresh seafood and Sri Lankan specialties to relax after the day’s walks.
Have an early breakfast (request an early tray if your hotel offers it) so you can maximize wildlife-spotting time; many hotels can prepare breakfast from 5:30–6:00am on request.
Morning jeep safari to look for elephants, birds and other wildlife; note the dry-season elephant 'gathering' is often most spectacular late afternoon, but morning safaris still offer good sightings and fewer vehicles. (Park open 6:00am–6:00pm.)
Dine at Heritance Kandalama or a nearby restaurant with views of the lake and surrounding forest — excellent cuisine and a memorable setting before the return drive. (Restaurant open to hotel guests and visitors.)
Head southwest on the A6/A1 toward Colombo or northwest to Bandaranaike Airport; choose drop-off in Colombo city if you have more time there, or go straight to BIA if you need to catch a flight. Estimated driving time: Sigiriya → Colombo ~3.5–4h, Sigiriya → BIA ~2.5–3h.
If you’re stopping in Colombo, your driver can drop you at your city hotel or a central landmark for a short walk/tea. If you need the airport for an outbound flight, continue to Bandaranaike and plan to arrive at least 2–3 hours before an international departure.
Final drop-off — confirm whether you prefer airport or city drop-off. If heading to the airport, remember to allow additional time for check-in and immigration (recommend 3 hours pre-flight for international).
