Collect rental car or private transfer in Guwahati and drive ~3–3.5 hours to Shillong (depends on traffic). The route climbs into Khasi Hills with scenic views — logical first move to acclimatize and avoid backtracking.
Visit Shillong Peak for panoramic hill views (viewing area normally open 9:00am–5:00pm) then Elephant Falls (open daylight hours) — both close to the city and great for photos.
Depart early (~2.5–3 hours from Shillong) for Mawlynnong to see the cleanest village in Asia; the village is walkable and best seen in the morning when mist and greenery are vivid.
Climb the bamboo skywalk for valley views and explore village life; the site is open during daylight hours (no formal gate hours but visit in daylight).
Short drive to Dawki for the crystal-clear Umngot River; boat rides usually operate 9:00am–4:00pm and show spectacular underwater clarity — perfect for photos.
Either return to Shillong (~3hr drive) or continue to Cherrapunjee (~1.5–2hr) to position for next day's hikes; Cherrapunjee stay shortens next day travel.
If not doing the strenuous 7–8 hour Root Bridge trek, enjoy shorter walks or start the drive to Kaziranga in late afternoon (Cherrapunjee → Kaziranga is ~5–6 hours).
Elephant safaris run early (approx 5:30–8:30am) and offer best chance for one-horned rhino sightings at close range — book in advance; availability seasonal and limited.
Jeep safaris usually run in two slots, early morning and mid-afternoon (approx 2:30–5:30pm); a jeep (shared) covers more area — best for spotting rhino, deer, wild water buffalo and birds.
Evening river cruises typically depart around sunset (approx 4:30–6:30pm depending on season) for a 1–1.5 hour scenic ride; book in advance for weekends.
Visit the Kamakhya Temple (opening hours: early morning puja often begins pre-dawn; afternoon & evening timings vary) to experience a spiritual morning; follow dress and photography rules.
If you want to chase snow, begin the northern overland trip: Guwahati → Tezpur → Bomdila (long drive with mountain roads). Note: this is an optional 3–4 day extension and best suited to travellers in good time/fitness.
Mountain pass drive with high-altitude scenery; travel time ~6–7 hours depending on road/season. Expect winding roads and possible landslide delays outside dry season.
Drive toward Sela Pass (elevation ~13,700 ft) and local lakes; pass is prone to snow during winter — outside Dec–Feb heavy snow is unlikely. Check road/permit/vehicle requirements before proceeding.
Start the long return drive toward Bomdila/Tezpur/Guwahati or stay additional days to increase snow chance during winter months (Dec–Feb recommended for snow).
