Family-Friendly Itinerary for Wayanadu in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Pookode Lake
30 minutes (11 miles) from Kalpetta

Pookode Lake is a freshwater lake nestled among the lush green hills of Wayanadu. The morning is the best time to visit the lake when the mist is still settling over the waters. You can take a boat ride on the lake and see some of the aquatic life below the surface. In the afternoon, you can take a picnic lunch by the lakeside and relax. The lake has a small handicrafts and spices emporium, where you can buy souvenirs and local spices to take back home. In the evening, you can take a stroll on the nature trail around the lake and spot some of the local flora and fauna.

  2. Day 2: Edakkal Caves
1 hour 30 minutes (34 miles) from Sulthan Bathery

Edakkal Caves are a must-visit for anyone interested in history or archaeology. These caves have ancient petroglyphs dating back to 6000 BC. You will need to do a bit of hiking to reach the caves, but it's worth it. In the morning, you can explore the caves and learn about their history. After a quick lunch, you can visit the Wayanad Heritage Museum, 10 minutes from the caves, to learn more about the history and culture of the region. In the evening, you can head to the nearby Soochipara Waterfalls for a refreshing dip in the cool waters and enjoy the scenic beauty of the falls.
