Start the day with a solid Indian breakfast on campus (poha/paratha/eggs/tea) so you have energy for the drive and security checks. Campus cafeterias typically open from early morning (check your specific mess/cafe hours).
Use the late morning to pack, check travel documents/ID (carry a government photo ID — required for security at Wagah), and fuel the vehicle or confirm taxi booking. Relax so you’re not rushed before departure.
Have a hearty Punjabi lunch before the drive — choose a clean dhaba or cafe near LPU/Phagwara for parathas, dal, paneer or a thali. Gives you long-lasting energy for the afternoon and evening.
Leave with a comfortable buffer for traffic. Estimated drive time is 2h15m–2h30m depending on traffic; choose NH routes and set GPS (Google Maps/Waze) for live updates. Carry water, a mask, and ID for entry.
The famous Wagah ceremony (Beating Retreat) happens around sunset and timing varies daily; gates typically open 60–90 minutes before. Arrive by 5:00pm to clear security, find seating/view and enjoy the energetic parade and flag-lowering. It’s a must-see for its patriotic pageantry.
After the ceremony, head into Amritsar city. Expect local traffic leaving the border; travel time is roughly 30–50 minutes depending on route and traffic — choose a taxi or private car.
Golden Temple complex is open 24 hours and is beautifully illuminated at night; evening parikrama and darshan are calm and memorable. Langar (community kitchen) runs continuously — take part or observe the sewa (service).
For an authentic experience, eat at the Golden Temple langar (free, continuous service). If you prefer a paid meal, nearby classics are Kesar Da Dhaba (traditional Punjabi cuisine) or Brothers’ Kulcha (Amritsari kulcha) — both are excellent for hearty Punjabi dishes and open in the evening.
Walk the parikrama again to see the Golden Temple reflected on the pool at night; it’s quieter and very photogenic. This is ideal before you check into nearby accommodation or start your return journey.
If you plan to return immediately, note the drive back to LPU/Phagwara takes ~2–3 hours — better to rest overnight in Amritsar and travel back early next morning. Book a hotel near the Golden Temple if staying; many budget and mid-range hotels are open 24 hours for check-in.
