Catch an early morning train from Jalandhar Cantt/City to Pathankot to reach the foothills with time to spare. Book Sleeper or 3A in advance; bring packed snacks and water for the journey.
From Pathankot station take a state bus or share a taxi (cheaper split between 4 people) up to Dharamshala/McLeod Ganj; the mountain drive offers views and takes around 2.5–3 hours depending on stops.
Eat at a budget local dhaba near McLeod Ganj market for hearty North Indian or Tibetan-style meals — filling, cheap and quick so you can begin the trek without delay. Most dhabas are open lunchtime (11:00am–3:00pm).
Begin the Triund trek from the Gallu Devi/Bhagsu trailhead; it’s a steady uphill walk through forests and meadows offering great views — budget hikers typically take 3.5–4.5 hours depending on pace. No official permit is required, but check local conditions and avoid trekking after dark.
Check in with your pre-booked budget camp operator or a tea-house on the ridge; camps usually provide a sleeping setup and hot water. In October the tea-houses/camps are open but confirm booking in advance — nights get cold, bring a warm sleeping bag.
Enjoy a simple camp dinner prepared by the camp operator (dal, rice/rotis, soup) and, if offered, a small campfire — budget-friendly and convenient after a long day of trekking. Expect earlier kitchen closing times on the ridge compared with town.
Wake early for sunrise over the Dhauladhar range — a highlight of the trek; have hot tea and simple breakfast provided by the camp or a tea stall to fuel your descent. Triund ridge is excellent for photography and panoramic views.
Start the downhill walk back to McLeod Ganj via the same trail; descending is faster but still takes steady effort (approx 3–4 hours) and is easiest with light daypacks. Carry adequate water and wear sturdy footwear.
Refuel at Bhagsu Café or another popular local spot in the Bhagsu area for pancakes, eggs, momos or Tibetan-style thukpa — cafés typically open from about 8:00am onward. This is a pleasant stop after the descent.
Short walk from Bhagsu village to the falls and adjacent temple; a relaxed stop to enjoy water and shaded trails — Bhagsu Falls are usually accessible daytime (approx 8:00am–6:00pm). Wear shoes with grip if paths are wet.
Have a budget-friendly Tibetan meal (momos, thukpa, fried rice) at a recommended local Tibetan kitchen in McLeod Ganj; it’s economical, filling and quick so you can finish remaining sightseeing and catch transport home.
Visit the Tsuglagkhang (Dalai Lama) temple complex and browse the McLeod Ganj market for budget souvenirs; temple visiting hours are usually morning–late afternoon (around 9:00am–5:30pm), so plan accordingly.
Depart Dharamshala in the early evening by state bus or shared taxi to arrive at Pathankot for the return train; shared taxis are faster and economical when split between four people. Travel times vary with traffic and daylight.
Catch an evening train back to Jalandhar; alternately adjust booking to suit preferred return time. If your train is later, use the extra time to have dinner at a station dhaba or grab train e-catering.
