2-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Banaras in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    15 minutes (3.2 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    Start your day early at Assi Ghat, one of the most popular ghats in Varanasi. The morning boat ride is a must-do experience to witness the city come alive with the sunrise. After the boat ride, explore the surrounding area and indulge in some local breakfast options. You can also take a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges. In the afternoon, visit the Tulsi Manas Temple, known for its beautiful marble work and Ramcharitmanas inscriptions on the walls. The temple is a peaceful haven away from the bustling city. In the evening, head to the Durga Temple, located near the famous Durga Kund. The temple is beautifully lit at night, and the aarti is a grand spectacle to witness.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    Start your day with a visit to Sarnath, one of the four Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The place is known for its rich history and beautiful Buddhist stupas, temples and monasteries. In the morning, visit the Sarnath Museum, which houses some of the finest Buddhist artifacts and sculptures. In the afternoon, visit the Dhammek Stupa, the largest and most impressive stupa in Sarnath. You can also visit the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, a beautiful monastery located nearby. In the evening, visit the Deer Park, which is a peaceful place to relax and meditate in the serene environment.

If you have an extra day, you can explore the Banaras Hindu University, which is known for its beautiful architecture and lush green campus. You can also visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most important temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is being reconstructed, but the main deity is still accessible for darshan. You can also consider a side trip to Chunar Fort, which is located around 40 km from Varanasi. The fort is situated on the banks of the Ganges and is known for its historical significance and beautiful views of the river. To maximize your fun, try out some of the local street food options, such as chaat, lassi, paan and thandai. You can also shop for some of the famous Banarasi silk sarees and handicrafts at the local markets.
