Valencia on a Shoestring Budget: 2-Day Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: The City Centre
12 minutes (1.2 miles) from the Valencia Airport

Valencia is a beautiful city with so much to offer. Start your day at the heart of the city, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Here you can admire the stunning architecture of the surrounding buildings and the various sculptures that decorate the square. After that, head to the Mercado Central, the largest market in Valencia, where you can find fresh produce, meats, and seafood. Satisfy your appetite by grabbing a bocadillo or a fresh-squeezed juice from one of the vendors inside. In the afternoon, make your way to the imposing Cathedral of Valencia and climb the 207 steps of the Miguelete Bell Tower for panoramic views of the city. End your day with a visit to the City of Arts and Sciences, a futuristic complex that houses a planetarium, an opera house, and a museum of science and technology.

  2. Day 2: The Beach and Beyond
20 minutes (3.5 miles) from the City Centre

Spend a day by the Mediterranean Sea at the Playa de la Malvarrosa. Relax on the sandy beach or take a stroll along the promenade. If you're feeling adventurous, rent a bike or a paddleboard and explore the coastline. For lunch, head to the nearby area of El Cabanyal and try the famous paella valenciana at Casa Carmela. In the afternoon, visit the Albufera Natural Park, a freshwater lagoon and one of the largest wetlands in Spain. Take a boat tour and observe the diverse birdlife or rent a bike and explore the park's trails. End your day with a sunset view of the lagoon while enjoying a refreshing horchata, a traditional Valencian drink made from tiger nuts.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the Torres de Serranos, a medieval gate that used to be part of the city's wall; the Lonja de la Seda, a Gothic-style building that used to be Valencia's silk exchange; or the Turia Gardens, a beautiful park that used to be a riverbed. If you want to escape the city, take a day trip to the picturesque town of Sagunto, located 25 km north of Valencia. There you can explore the ancient castle and amphitheatre or visit the Roman theatre museum. To maximize your fun, try some of the local delicacies such as buñuelos de calabaza, fartons, or turrón. Finally, make sure to check out the local events calendar for any festivals or concerts that might be happening during your visit.
