Board an overnight express/Rajdhani from Howrah to New Delhi (or Howrah–Anand Vihar / Howrah–Ambala options). Overnight train travel saves a day of road travel and is the most comfortable way to cover the long distance by rail.
Buy packaged snacks, water, warm layers and a light dinner at Howrah station; if you prefer a sit-down before departure, Flurys (Park Street) or Bhojohori Manna are good Kolkata options (open roughly 8:00am–10:00pm), but allow extra time to reach the station.
Arrival in New Delhi early-to-mid morning (exact arrival depends on chosen train). Collect luggage and transfer to New Delhi railway station / ISBT for onward travel.
Stretch your legs on the Sector 17/Leisure Valley area and grab coffee. Indian Coffee House or local cafes on Sector 17 are good quick stops (typical opening 8:00am–9:00pm).
Take a Volvo/taxi Chandigarh→Shimla (approx 3.5–4.5h depending on road). Staying in Shimla breaks the long drive to Kinnaur and helps acclimatize gradually.
Try Wake & Bake Café or Café Sol near the Mall Road for a relaxed dinner (many places open until 10:00–11:00pm). If arriving late, have a simple hotel meal.
Hearty breakfast at your hotel or Mall Road cafe to prepare for a long drive; choose eggs, porridge, and tea or coffee to stay energized (many cafés open 8:00am).
Full-day scenic road journey to Rampur Bushahr (6–8h) passing Narkanda and through apple orchards; stop en route for photos and short breaks. Roads improve beyond Rampur toward Kinnaur.
Settle into a guesthouse/hotel in Reckong Peo and walk the small market to arrange local permits/guides. Local guesthouses often help hire guides and provide packed lunches for trek.
Eat at your guesthouse or try a local dhaba for simple home-cooked Himachali dishes — rajma, thukpa and potato preparations are comforting and widely available (dinner typically served until 9:00–10:00pm).
Have breakfast and finalise trekking permit and local guide at the forest office or with your guesthouse; permits and a local guide are strongly recommended — ask your host about required IDs and fees.
Drive 45–60 minutes to Sangla village and Baspa river valley for easy walks and views; Sangla (ca. 2,700m) is a common staging area with beautiful apple orchards and riverside cafes.
Meet your trek guide to confirm route, emergency plan, and pickup times; check rented gear (warm sleeping bag, trekking poles) and pack a daypack for the main trek day.
Early simple breakfast (porridge/eggs/tea). Drive to the selected trailhead (guide will choose best start point — commonly from a nearby village or parking area depending on conditions).
The Kinnaur Kailash trek is typically a strenuous day trek to a sacred rock/temple and viewpoint around the Kinnaur Kailash massif; the exact route and length depend on season and the trailhead (6–9 hours round trip). A local guide is essential for navigation and safety.
Stop for a packed lunch with scenic views — your guesthouse or guide will prepare a sturdy packed meal (sandwiches, fruits, nuts, hot soup if available).
Enjoy a warm dinner at the guesthouse or a riverside café; try local Himachali specialities and discuss photos with your guide. If tired, order a simple dal–rice–sabzi meal.
After breakfast drive to Chitkul (if roads permit) — Chitkul is the last inhabited village before the Indo-Tibetan border and perfect for a relaxed walk (road time ~1–1.5h from Sangla). Check opening/access restrictions seasonally.
Drive Shimla→Chandigarh (~3.5–4.5h) if you stayed in Shimla; arrive Chandigarh by early afternoon to catch a train to New Delhi or an overnight train back to Kolkata via Delhi connection.
Take a fast train to New Delhi (3–4h). From Delhi you can board an overnight Rajdhani/Duronto back to Howrah/Howrah–Kolkata in the evening — book seats in advance.
Overnight sleeper/AC train to Howrah; sleep on board and expect to reach Kolkata the next day morning. If you prefer to break journey, spend the night in Delhi and take a morning train next day.
