Leave Chennai early on NH48/NH16 to avoid city traffic; the highway sections to Bangalore are 3–4 lane and four‑wheeler friendly. Expect a 6–7 hour drive depending on traffic and stops.
Stop in Malleshwaram for classic Bengaluru tiffin: masala dosa or idli at CTR (Central Tiffin Room) or Veena Stores; both are iconic and give a quick local breakfast experience. Check current opening hours (many open from about 7:00am).
Walk 30–60 minutes around Malleshwaram market lanes and Sankey Tank (if you prefer a small lakeside break) to stretch legs after the drive; these are open-air public places with no entry fees.
Have a satisfying South Indian / Andhra-style lunch at MTR (Malleshwaram) or nearby Nagarjuna; MTR is famous for its thali and filter coffee — check that lunch service starts around 11:30am–12:00pm.
Head from Bangalore to BR Hills via Mysore/Hunsur/K.R. Nagar route (approx 4–5 hours, ~170–200 km). Intercity roads are good; the final approach into BR Hills becomes single-lane, winding and narrower — drive in daylight for best conditions.
Check in to your chosen accommodation (Jungle Lodges & Resorts B.R. Hills or a private resort/village homestay). Dinner is typically provided by the resort; confirm kitchen closing time when you check in.
Early-morning safari is the best time for wildlife (deer, elephants, leopard signs, birds). Safaris are controlled by Karnataka Forest Department / Jungle Lodges — book in advance; most safaris run early morning and late afternoon. Note: access to core zones requires a permit and a forest department vehicle or authorised jeep.
Visit the temple located on the hill — it’s a cultural highlight with scenic views; temple timings vary but early morning and afternoon hours are common — dress respectfully and check the temple’s opening times with the lodge.
Take a guided walk along designated trails or birdwatch from a viewpoint. Guided walks are organised by the lodge or forest department and are best during daylight (midday walks are warmer; a late-afternoon walk is cooler).
If you’ve booked the evening slot, head out for another safari — late afternoon is good for large mammal activity. Confirm the evening safari start (many runs 3:30–6:00pm).
Drive via Hunsur and Kushalnagar to the Dhondenling Tibetan Settlement (Bylakuppe) — about 2.5–3 hours depending on stops; roads are mostly two-lane state highways and four‑wheeler friendly.
The large Tibetan monastery complex is the main sight in Bylakuppe — see the prayer halls, statues, and monks in residence. Typical visiting hours are roughly 9:00am–5:00pm, but check locally for puja times and special closures.
Enjoy Tibetan food (thukpa, momos, butter tea) at a monastery-run or local café; many small eateries near the monastery serve authentic Tibetan dishes.
Walk around the settlement to buy handicrafts, thankas, woollens and observe daily life; many shops open through the afternoon—confirm shop hours locally.
Drive to Mysore (approx 45–60 minutes) for a wider choice of hotels and dining. If you prefer a shorter next-day drive to Chennai, staying in Mysore is practical.
Have an early breakfast. If you have time and interest, visit Mysore Palace (generally open from about 10:00am to late afternoon) — allow at least 1–1.5 hours to see the palace; otherwise start the long drive back to Chennai.
Begin the drive east towards Chennai via NH275 / NH 766 / NH44 or the preferred highway route through Bangalore depending on your choice; expect 7–8 hours driving time to Chennai with stops.
