Varkala (Cliff & Varkala Beach)

Arrive Varkala — Cliffside Relaxation, Beaches & Sunset

Morning:

Arrive in Varkala and settle into a cliffside guesthouse or boutique hotel along the iconic Varkala Cliff; after dropping bags, take a gentle stroll to Sivagiri Mutt to glimpse its peaceful hilltop views and local pilgrim life. Follow with a relaxed breakfast at a cliff café such as Café del Mar or Darjeeling Café, sampling fresh South Indian fare and filter coffee while watching fishermen and early morning walkers on Varkala Beach below.

Afternoon:

Spend a lazy afternoon exploring the stretch of shops, Ayurvedic spas and art galleries atop the cliff, then walk down the stairway to enjoy sunbathing, swimming or a surf lesson at Varkala Beach; for a quieter spot, head east along the sand toward the black-sand stretch near Janardhana Swamy Temple. Break for a seaside lunch at The Juice Shack or Clafouti, and if interested, book an evening Ayurvedic massage at one of the cliffside centres to unwind before sunset.

Evening:

Return to the cliff in time for a spectacular sunset at the northern viewpoint—grab a cold drink and find a ledge with a view as the horizon turns gold and crimson, then wander to the nearby Janardhana Swamy Temple to soak in the evening pooja atmosphere. Finish the night with dinner at a cliff-top restaurant like Darjeeling Café or The Soul’s Kitchen, enjoying seafood specialties and live acoustic music while planning the next day's trip to Jatayu Earth’s Center and the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum.

Day 2 · Sun, Dec 7
Jatayu Earth’s Center (Chadayamangalam) and Thiruvananthapuram

Day trip to Jatayu Earth’s Center & Return via Padmanabhaswamy Temple (Trivandrum)

Morning:

Leave Varkala early after a light cliffside breakfast and a quick check-out, driving (~1-1.25 hrs) to Jatayu Earth’s Center in Chadayamangalam to arrive when the park opens. Explore the dramatic world’s largest rock sculpture of Jatayu—take the cable car up to the vantage platform, walk the themed trails, and visit the Jatayu Adventure Centre for zipline or rock-climbing experiences while soaking in panoramic Western Ghats views.

Afternoon:

Enjoy a packed picnic or café lunch at the center, then spend more time in the interactive museum and heritage gallery learning the Ramayana legends behind the sculpture. Mid-afternoon, depart for Thiruvananthapuram (about 45-60 minutes), arriving in time to visit the ornate Padmanabhaswamy Temple precincts—observe the architecture and rituals from the permitted viewing areas and, if eligible, pre-arranged darshan; otherwise stroll the nearby East Fort area, grab a late South Indian meal at a local eatery like Indian Coffee House or Villa Maya’s café.

Evening:

Before returning to Varkala, catch the tranquil evening aarti atmosphere around the Padmanabhaswamy Temple and wander the lit lanes of East Fort, sampling sweets or fresh coconut water from street vendors. Drive back to Varkala after sunset (or stay in Trivandrum if you prefer a relaxed night), arriving at the cliff where you can reflect on the day over a seaside dinner, completing your weekend escape with fresh seafood or an Ayurvedic supper.
