2-Day Leh Itinerary from Delhi: Quick High-Altitude Escape with Top Sights

Day 1 · Thu, Dec 4
Leh (Ladakh)

Arrival, Acclimatization and Leh Local Highlights

6:30 AM:

Arrive at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh. Collect luggage, complete arrival formalities and meet your pre-arranged transfer (hotel pick-up) — take it slow to begin acclimatization.

7:15 AM:

Transfer to your hotel such as The Grand Dragon Leh or The Tibetan Guest House. Check-in/early luggage drop and rest for 30-45 minutes; sip warm lemon or ginger tea provided by the hotel to hydrate gently.

8:00 AM:

Light breakfast at the hotel (try local barley porridge or a simple omelette). Keep activity minimal—avoid heavy exertion while your body adjusts to altitude.

9:00 AM:

Short, gentle walk around Leh Market (Main Bazaar). Browse Tibetan handicrafts, prayer wheels and shawls—walk slowly, stop frequently and breathe deeply to help acclimatize.

10:00 AM:

Visit Leh Palace (short uphill walk from the market). Spend 30-45 minutes admiring panaromic views of Leh town and learning about the royal history — go at an easy pace and rest at the vantage points.

11:00 AM:

Return to hotel for a rest and hydration break; sip electrolyte drink or the hotel’s traditional apricot sherbet. Avoid strenuous activity; read or relax in the lounge.

12:30 PM:

Lunch at The Tibetan Kitchen or Gesmo Restaurant — choose simple, familiar dishes (dal, rice, vegetable stews) and try a small serving of local thukpa if you feel up to it.

2:00 PM:

Visit Shanti Stupa (short drive). Take the moderate number of steps slowly or drive up and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, white-domed stupa and sweeping views at leisure.

3:00 PM:

Walk down to the nearby Japanese Peace Pagoda area and spend time taking photos and breathing in the clear mountain air; stop at a café like Bon Appetit for a hot beverage if needed.

4:00 PM:

Explore Sankar Gompa and the nearby traditional lanes. Walk slowly through narrow alleys, observe prayer flags and small family-run shops — return to hotel if you feel any symptoms of altitude sickness.

5:00 PM:

Tea and snacks at the hotel or at the cozy Bon Appetit Café (try Tibetan bread or momos if appetite is normal). Use this time to rest, journal or acclimatization breathing exercises.

6:00 PM:

Short evening stroll across Leh Market to pick up small souvenirs — keep moving slowly and avoid rushing. If you feel tired, head back to the hotel earlier.

7:30 PM:

Dinner at The Tibetan Kitchen, Central Asian Kitchen or The Tibetan Guest House restaurant — enjoy simple, warming dishes like thupka, steamed momos or vegetable stew; avoid alcohol and heavy meals.

9:00 PM:

Return to your hotel for an early night. Hydrate, take any prescribed altitude medication (e.g., acetazolamide) as directed, and sleep early to help acclimatization and prepare for the next day’s monastery visits.

Day 2 · Fri, Dec 5
Leh Surroundings

Monasteries and Scenic Sights: Thiksey, Shey & Shanti Stupa

6:30 AM:

Wake gently and have a light hotel breakfast (porridge, toast, hot lemon/ginger tea) at The Grand Dragon Leh or your chosen guesthouse; confirm the driver/vehicle for the day and pack a warm jacket and water.

7:30 AM:

Depart Leh with your driver for Shey Palace and Monastery (approx 30-40 minute drive) — travel slowly, enjoy the morning light over the Indus valley and use the drive to further acclimatize.

8:15 AM:

Arrive at Shey Palace; explore the ruins and the small monastery, see the ancient Buddha statue and take in wide valley views — spend 45-60 minutes at a measured pace.

9:30 AM:

Drive toward Thiksey Monastery (20-30 minutes). Stop en route for photos of the high-desert landscape and small nomad camps if visible.

10:00 AM:

Arrive at Thiksey Monastery. Wander through its multi-storey courtyards, visit the impressive Maitreya (future Buddha) statue, and enjoy panoramic views of the Indus river — allow 60-75 minutes for a relaxed visit.

11:30 AM:

Short drive to Hemis or Stok area if you wish to view local gompas from a distance (optional quick photo stop), otherwise return toward Leh on a scenic route; sip water and a warm beverage at a roadside tea stall if needed.

12:30 PM:

Lunch at Lamayuru-style dhaba or back in Leh at Gesmo Restaurant — choose warming, familiar dishes (dal, rice, momos) and avoid heavy meals; rest for 30-45 minutes before the afternoon sightseeing.

1:30 PM:

Drive to Namgyal Tsemo Gompa and Leh Palace viewpoint for a short visit and photos; take it easy on the uphill walk and pause often to enjoy the views over Leh town.

2:15 PM:

Head up to Shanti Stupa (if you prefer, drive the short distance rather than climb) to experience the bright white stupa in afternoon light and panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains.

3:00 PM:

Spend time at Bon Appetit Café near Shanti Stupa or back in Leh for a hot drink and Tibetan bakery items; journal about the day and rest before a late afternoon temple visit.

3:45 PM:

Visit Sankar Gompa and the small lanes around Leh Bazaar for a relaxed cultural walk — browse prayer wheels, pick up any last-minute handicrafts at Snow Leopard or Tibetan Market outlets, and move slowly.

5:00 PM:

Return to your hotel to freshen up and rest; hydrate, take any altitude medication as prescribed, and prepare for a calm evening in town.

6:30 PM:

Early dinner at The Tibetan Kitchen or Bon Appetit in Leh — enjoy comforting dishes like thukpa, steamed momos or a plate of local apricot jam on toast; avoid alcohol and heavy spice before bed.

8:00 PM:

If feeling energetic, take a short, slow stroll to the Leh Market for a last look at the lit prayer flags and shopfronts, or rest at the hotel with a warm drink and reflect on the monasteries visited.

9:30 PM:

Return to your room for an early night; lay out plans for departure the next morning, continue gentle hydration, and sleep early to consolidate acclimatization and prepare for travel back to Delhi or onward.
