Pune to Bhimashankar — Morning ride, temple visit and short treks

Morning:

Leave Pune early (around 6:00 AM) for a crisp winter ride via the NH48 and the scenic Lonavala-Khandala stretch, stopping for chai and quick breakfast at a highway dhaba near Kamshet. Arrive at Bhimashankar by mid-morning, park your bikes and visit the ancient Bhimashankar Shiva Temple; take time to soak in the sanctum’s atmosphere and the carved stone architecture while watching the surrounding deodhar forests wake up.

Afternoon:

After temple darshan, enjoy a simple lunch at a local homestay or small eatery, then set out on short treks: the easy 1-2 hour trek to the Bhimashankar plateau and the scenic trek to the nearby Bhorgiri/Old Fort ruins for panoramic views. Explore the Shingnapur and Kamleshwar waterfall area if water flow permits, or walk the forest trails looking for endemic flora and—if lucky—the Indian Giant Squirrel and Himalayan birds.

Evening:

Return to your guesthouse before sunset, freshen up and take a short stroll around the village to watch the sky turn golden over the Western Ghats. Spend the evening around a bonfire (where available), enjoying local Maharashtrian thali or hot snacks while planning tomorrow’s wildlife and waterfall explorations.

Bhimashankar

Explore Bhimashankar Wildlife & Surroundings — Waterfalls and viewpoints

Morning:

Rise early for a guided birdwatching walk in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, following the forest trail toward the Ganesh Ghat and Deochand peak where you can spot Malabar whistling-thrushes, woodpeckers and, if lucky, the Indian Giant Squirrel. After the walk, warm up with chai and a light breakfast at your guesthouse before heading to the nearby Kamleshwar and Shingnapur waterfall feeders to enjoy misty winter cascades and crisp valley views.

Afternoon:

After lunch at a local homestay, take the short trek to the Bhorgiri fort ruins for sweeping views over the Bhima valley and the dense deodar and oak forests; pause at scenic clearings for photos and to look for endemic orchids and butterflies. Next, ride out to the Bhimashankar plateau and explore lesser-known loops—easy trails that traverse shola grasslands and offer quiet spots for relaxation and nature observation.

Evening:

Return to your guesthouse in late afternoon and freshen up before walking to a nearby viewpoint to watch the sun sink behind the Western Ghats, painting the deodhar forest in gold; this is an ideal time for silhouette shots of the ridgelines. Back at the homestay, share a warm Maharashtrian meal around a bonfire, swap wildlife sightings from the day, and go over the next day’s plan to ride toward Bhandardara.

Bhandardara

Ride to Bhandardara — Arthur Lake, Umbrella Falls and sunset at Ratangad view

Morning:

Pack up after an early breakfast in Bhimashankar and enjoy a crisp winter ride toward Bhandardara via Igatpuri, taking the scenic ghats and stopping at a roadside chai stall near Ghoti for a warming break; arrive at Bhandardara by late morning and park near the Arthur Lake promenade. Stretch your legs with a leisurely walk along Arthur Lake’s calm waters, rent a paddleboat if you like, and visit the nearby Wilson Dam to admire the reservoir framed by misty hills.

Afternoon:

After a lakeside lunch at a local café or homestay, head to Umbrella Falls (near Kohoje) — follow the short hike from the road to feel the cool spray and photograph the cascading curtain of water, especially dramatic in winter light. Next, take a relaxed ride toward the Ratangad base village and prepare for the short trek up to the Ratangad viewpoint, pausing at viewpoints along the way to soak in sweeping views of the mist-shrouded valley and the twin peaks surrounding Bhandardara.

Evening:

Time your ascent to reach the Ratangad viewpoint before sunset and watch the Western Ghats glow orange and purple as the sun dips behind the ridgelines — this is a prime spot for panoramic golden-hour photos and quiet reflection after two days of forest and wildlife. Return to your guesthouse or campsite in Bhandardara for a hot Maharashtrian meal, warm up by a bonfire if available, and review tomorrow’s gentle morning walk and ride back to Pune.

Day 4 · Sat, Dec 27
Bhandardara to Pune

Bhandardara morning walk and return to Pune — Leisurely ride back with photo stops

Morning:

Wake to a crisp winter dawn and take a slow lakeside walk along Arthur Lake, watching fishermen prepare nets and capturing mist drifting off the water; if you’re staying near Wilson Dam, stroll across the dam for wide reservoir views and a few final birding opportunities. Pack a light breakfast or grab chai and vada pav at a local stall, then ride up briefly to the Umbrella Falls viewpoint for one last photo of cascading waters framed by the Ghats before you set off.

Afternoon:

Begin the gentle ride back toward Pune via Igatpuri and the Ghoti stretch, planning photo stops at scenic pullouts—especially the views near Kalsubai and the winding ghats—plus a relaxed lunch at a highway dhaba around Ghoti or Lonavala to refuel. Take your time on the NH48/Kamshet sections, detouring if you like to stop at Pawna Lake for quick panoramic shots or a short walk along the lakeshore to stretch your legs.

Evening:

Arrive back in Pune in the late afternoon or early evening, aiming to reach before dusk so you can tidy the bikes and warm up with a hearty Maharashtrian meal at a favourite city restaurant; recount highlights from the Bhimashankar treks, Ratangad sunset and Bhandardara’s serene lake. Unpack slowly, charge cameras and phones, and save your best images—this relaxed finish gives you time to plan a photo edit or another winter ride soon.
