6-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Sri Lanka in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Colombo
    45 minutes (21.7 km) from Bandaranaike International Airport

    In the morning, visit the Galle Face Green, a popular ocean-side urban park. After lunch, head to the National Museum of Colombo, a great introduction to Sri Lanka’s rich history. In the evening, enjoy a sunset boat ride at Beira Lake.

  2. Day 2: Kandy
    2 hours 40 minutes (115 km) from Colombo

    In the morning, visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a sacred Buddhist temple that houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. After lunch, explore the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, known for its collection of orchids and giant bamboo. In the evening, catch a traditional Kandyan dance performance.

  3. Day 3: Nuwara Eliya
    2 hours 20 minutes (78 km) from Kandy

    In the morning, take a scenic train ride from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, also known as Little England for its colonial architecture. After lunch, visit a tea plantation and learn about the process of tea making. In the evening, stroll through the town center and enjoy the cool climate.

  4. Day 4: Yala National Park
    4 hours (187 km) from Nuwara Eliya

    In the morning, go on a safari at Yala National Park, known for its leopards and elephants. After lunch, visit the nearby Kataragama Temple, a multi-religious pilgrimage site. In the evening, relax at your hotel or campsite.

  5. Day 5: Mirissa

    In the morning, take a leisurely stroll through the Negombo Fish Market, a bustling hub of activity. After lunch, spend some time on the beach or at the hotel pool. In the evening, enjoy a sunset boat ride on the Negombo Lagoon.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the ancient city of Anuradhapura or the hill station of Ella. For a unique experience, take a hot air balloon ride over the hills of Kandalama.
