3-Day Jaisalmer Highlights: Fort, Desert Safari & Heritage Stays

Day 1 · Mon, Dec 15
Jaisalmer (Old City)

Arrival, Jaisalmer Fort & Old City Exploration

Morning:

Arrive in Jaisalmer and drop your bags at a heritage stay such as Suryagarh, Fort Rajwada, or a cozy havelī inside the fort; check in and freshen up before heading out. Begin your walk at the imposing Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila) — explore the Jain temples, narrow lanes and ramparts for panoramic views of the honey-colored city and photograph the early morning light on the sandstone walls.

Afternoon:

After a traditional Rajasthani lunch at a rooftop café (try rooftop views at Trio or The Hosteller), wander down to Patwaon Ki Haveli to admire intricate carvings and the Patwon family mansions; then visit the small but atmospheric Gadisar Lake for birdlife and peaceful reflections. Pop into local shops along Sadar Bazaar to browse handicrafts, embroidered textiles and silver jewelry—pick up a khadi scarf or a camel leather souvenir.

Evening:

Return to the fort area as the sun softens and stroll the bastions at dusk to watch the city glow; catch the light play on the sandstone from the fort’s northern ramparts. Finish with dinner at your haveli or a recommended rooftop restaurant, enjoying dal bati churma or ker sangri, followed by a leisurely cup of masala chai while listening to folk music if available.

Day 2 · Tue, Dec 16
Sam Sand Dunes / Desert Area

Sam Sand Dunes Desert Safari & Sunset Experience

Morning:

After breakfast at your haveli in the Fort, set out around 8:30-9:00 AM for the drive to Sam (about 40-50 minutes). Stop en route at the Desert Cultural Centre if you like to stretch your legs and learn about Thar crafts, then arrive at Sam for a gentle camel safari—ride across rolling golden dunes and let the fort’s honey-colored silhouette fade behind you as a guide shares folk tales and information about desert flora and fauna.

Afternoon:

Return to the Sam village or your desert camp for a traditional Rajasthani thali lunch and a short rest; many camps such as The Serai, Desert Luxury Camp, or affordable community camps offer comfortable tents and shaded lounges. In the early afternoon explore nearby sand formations on foot, try sandboarding or a 4x4 dune-bashing excursion, and visit a local nomad family or the small dune-side craft stalls to see block-print textiles and camel leather goods.

Evening:

As late afternoon approaches, head up a tall dune to watch the iconic Jaisalmer sunset—arrive 45 minutes before sunset to catch the changing colours and take panoramic photos; several camps arrange live Rajasthani folk music, puppet shows and a bonfire. Finish the night with a hearty dinner at your camp (dal bati churma, bajra rotis), stargazing over the silent desert, and either return to your Fort stay or spend the night in a heritage-style desert camp for a memorable contrast to day one.

Day 3 · Wed, Dec 17
Jaisalmer outskirts & Old City

Kuldhara, Patwon Ki Haveli & Departure

Morning:

Start early and drive 20-30 minutes west to the eerie abandoned village of Kuldhara; wander the sand-swept lanes, read the legends of its vanished residents, and photograph the weathered stone houses in the soft morning light. On the return toward town, stop at the local craft clusters near Kodamdesar to shop for block-printed textiles and pick up any last-minute camel-leather goods or silver jewelry.

Afternoon:

Back in the Old City, revisit Patwon Ki Haveli for a more relaxed, detailed exploration of its carved balconies and narrow courtyards, and drop into the small museums inside to learn about merchant life and mirror-work; enjoy a leisurely rooftop lunch at Trio or The Laughing Barge with views over the yellow sandstone roofs. If time allows, slip into the neighbouring Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli and the tiny shops along Sadar Bazaar for spices, lac bangles and sweetmeats like ghevar to take home.

Evening:

Return to your heritage stay in the Fort to collect luggage and savor a final cup of masala chai on the ramparts as the city warms in late afternoon sun; if your schedule permits, watch one last golden-hour panorama from the fort walls before leaving. Depart for the station or airport with plenty of time, carrying the day’s quiet desert memories and the colourful handicrafts you’ve gathered as souvenirs.
