2-Day Road Trip: Sonda to Bangalore Itinerary — Dec 27–28, 2025

Day 1 · Sat, Dec 27
Sonda to Shimoga/Honnemaradu area

Scenic stops and cultural sites en route to Bangalore

Morning:

Leave Sonda early and drive toward Shimoga, stopping first at the lush Jog Falls viewpoint for a brisk walk along the viewing platforms and dramatic photo ops of the cascading water (allow 60-90 minutes). After that, detour to the historic Keladi Rameshwara Temple near Shimoga to admire 17th-century architecture and quiet courtyards — a peaceful place to stretch legs and soak up local culture before continuing toward Honnemaradu.

Afternoon:

Arrive around midday in the Honnemaradu area for a lakeside lunch and boat activities on the backwaters of the Sharavathi reservoir; opt for a guided coracle or motor-boat ride to see the serene islands and birdlife (reserve in advance if possible). Following lunch, explore the nearby Gudavi Bird Sanctuary if time permits, or take a short trek through nearby forests to spot endemic trees and enjoy panoramic reservoir views.

Evening:

As the sun lowers, settle into a lakeside homestay or eco-resort in Honnemaradu for a relaxed evening — enjoy local Malnad cuisine for dinner and listen to the sounds of the reservoir. If you're up for it, a gentle sunset walk along the reservoir edge or a short night-time bonfire (where allowed by your accommodation) is a tranquil way to end the day before an early start toward Bangalore tomorrow.

Day 2 · Sun, Dec 28
Shimoga/Honnemaradu area to Bangalore

Final leg to Bangalore with key attractions and arrival

Morning:

Wake to a peaceful lakeside breakfast at your Honnemaradu homestay, then take one last early stroll along the Sharavathi backwaters to drink in the misty morning light and spot kingfishers and egrets. Pack up and drive toward Sagar, stopping at the historic Keladi Rameshwara Temple if you missed any details yesterday, or detour to the scenic Muppane Falls viewpoint for a short leg-stretch and fresh mountain air before you hit the highway to Bangalore.

Afternoon:

Break the long drive with lunch in Shivamogga town — sample Malnad thali specialties like akki rotti and koli saaru — then continue on the NH48/SH routes, taking a short stop at the notable Koppa or Sakleshpur viewpoints if time allows to admire Western Ghats panoramas and take photos. If you prefer a nature pause, plan a quick 30-45 minute walk through the coffee estates near Sakleshpur to refresh before the final stretch toward the city.

Evening:

Arrive in Bangalore by early evening, easing into the city with a relaxed dinner in the Jayanagar or Indiranagar neighborhoods to experience contemporary Karnataka cuisine and urban nightlife. Unpack at your Bangalore accommodation and finish the day with a gentle walk in Cubbon Park or a rooftop view of the city lights — a calm bookend to two days of waterfalls, reservoirs and Malnad culture.
