A rental car is necessary to get around Estes Park and the surrounding areas. Although there are a few shuttle services, availability is limited, and car rentals provide much more flexibility. Keep in mind that mountainous terrain and steep grades can be challenging terrain, so make sure to factor in extra driving time to destinations.
If you have more time, we recommend going on a horseback ride in the park, taking a helicopter tour over the Rockies, or visiting the famous Colorado Hot Springs. On the other hand, if you have less time, consider skipping some of the activities above and focusing solely on the National Park or the Downtown Estes Park.
The closest airport to Estes Park is Denver International Airport (DEN), which is located about 70 miles southeast of the town. It takes about an hour and a half to drive from the airport to the town. Rental cars and shuttle services are available for transport.
