Drive from Bangalore to Gandikota — Arrival and Sunset at the Gorge

Morning:

Leave Bangalore after a leisurely breakfast and head north via NH44, stopping for coffee and a quick stretch at a highway service plaza near Kolar; expect about 3-3.5 hours of driving before the next break. On arrival in the Gandikota area late morning, check into your guesthouse, then explore the rugged riverbank east of the fort—walk along the Pennar River cliffs, scout secluded viewpoints and the old stepwells nearby, and grab a light lunch at a local dhaba to fuel up for the afternoon gorge visit.

Afternoon:

Spend the afternoon crossing to the western rim of the gorge to visit the recently restored Raghunathaswamy temple precinct and climb the adjacent rocky terraces for panoramic views of the Pennar canyon; local guides often point out nesting kestrels and the best ledges for photographs. Afterwards wander through the village bazaar toward a riverside campsite where you can rent a coracle for a short paddle or relax on the sandstone benches while tea and roasted corn are served before the sunset spectacle.

Evening:

As dusk deepens, stroll up to the tranquil Sangam viewpoint a short walk from the campsite to watch the gorge glow—vendors sell hot masala chai and pakoras so you can snack while the light fades. After sunset, head back to your guesthouse for a relaxed dinner of local Rayalaseema cuisine (try the chilly buttermilk curry) and, if available, join a small bonfire near the property where fellow travelers and hosts share stories under clear starry skies.

Day 2 · Wed, Dec 24
Gandikota / Nearby

Explore Gandikota Fort, Belum Caves optional en route

Morning:

Start your day with a guided walk through the inner lanes of Gandikota Fort, visiting the ornate Jamia Masjid ruins and the imposing granaries while your guide recounts the fortress’s Vijayanagara-and-Nizam era history; climb the fort ramparts at sunrise for sweeping views of the Pennar bend. Afterward, drive a short distance to the quiet Mukkala village to see ancient stepwells and then stop at a nearby family-run eatery for fresh filter coffee and regional breakfast specialties like pesarattu before deciding whether to continue to Belum Caves for an afternoon excursion.

Afternoon:

After a morning inside the fort, drive south a short distance to the tranquil Erramadagu Reservoir where you can hike the salt-and-sandstone terraces for birdwatching (pelicans and wagtails are common) and visit the nearby Kotta Palle stepwell complex for evocative photo ops. Later, head to the rustic hamlet of Kondair for a hands-on kulfi-making demo with a local family and sample spiced millet snacks while watching the golden light wash the countryside before returning to your guesthouse.

Evening:

As daylight wanes, head to the tranquil Heranur Lakeside (a short drive from the fort) for a mellow evening of birdwatching and a riverside picnic of local sweets and spicy mirchi bajji while watching fishermen bring in their nets. Afterwards, wander through the nearby pottery lane where artisans shape terracotta lamps by hand, pick up a unique keepsake, then return to your guesthouse for a dinner of local millet rotis and a relaxed storytelling session with your host under the stars.

Day 3 · Thu, Dec 25
Gandikota to Bangalore (drive back)

Relaxed morning, local sightseeing and return toward Bangalore

Morning:

Enjoy a slow, scenic start with breakfast at your guesthouse before taking a short drive to the tranquil Erragudi hamlet to visit the centuries-old Kalyani stepwell and its painted temple facade, where you can photograph carved pillars and watch village life unfold. Afterward, follow the riverside track to the small but atmospheric Kondanur waterfall for a brief walk and a refreshing dip, then pack up and begin the drive south with a stop at a roadside shop to pick up homemade pickles and millet snacks for the journey back to Bangalore.

Afternoon:

After a leisurely breakfast, drive toward the nearby Penna River banks at Kammavari Gattu to explore its lesser-known rock shelters and fresco-splashed caves—chat with local shepherds who graze the plateau and try freshly roasted groundnuts from a roadside vendor. Later, stop at the small town of Tadipatri en route to visit the 17th-century Chintala Venkataramana Temple with its carved pillars and cool stone corridors, before beginning the drive back to Bangalore with a final roadside stop for tender coconut refreshment and homemade tamarind candy.

Evening:

Before setting off toward Bangalore, stop at the sleepy village of Jammalamadugu Roadside Market to browse for woven baskets and sun-dried pickles, then take a short detour to the centuries-old Kalyanamahal temple ruins where late-afternoon light softens the carved stone — a peaceful spot for photos and quiet reflection. Finish the day with a leisurely riverside lunch at a family-run dhaba in Pulivendula, sampling spicy kodi kura (chicken curry) and millet dosas, then begin the drive home with one last chai break at a highway stall watching the landscape turn from red rock to plains.
