Bangalore to Gandikota 2-day driving itinerary — 25–26 Dec 2025 (with en-route cave options)

Day 1 · Thu, Dec 25
Bangalore → Gandikota (via Kurnool/Anantapur route)

Drive Bangalore → Gandikota with en-route sightseeing (early start)

Morning:

Leave Bangalore at 01:00 am and make your first stop at the roadside town of Chikkaballapur for a quick sunrise chai and crisp idli — a perfect energy boost before the long drive. Continue past Anantapur with a planned detour to the ancient rock-cut temples at Kadiri for 45-60 minutes, exploring their carved pillars and cool interiors, then stretch your legs with a short picnic at a scenic highway pullout before resuming toward Gandikota to keep on schedule for an afternoon arrival.

Afternoon:

After your Kadiri stop and highway picnic, take the detour toward the village of Lepakshi to admire its famous hanging pillar and ornately painted Veerabhadra Temple for a 45-60 minute cultural stretch; sample crisp local sweets from a roadside vendor. Resume the drive and pause at the scenic Pennar River overlook near Gandikota for photos and a short riverside walk before checking in at your guesthouse by 16:00, leaving time to settle in and catch the canyon’s golden-hour views.

Evening:

After checking in and freshening up, head down to the Gandikota Fort rim to wander the ruined bastions and watch the sun sink into the Pennar River canyon — try the small cliffside tea stall near the viewpoint for fresh masala chai as the light softens. Follow sunset with a gentle boat ride on the Pennar (available until dusk) or a short guided walk to the Belum-Basava shrine tucked below the fort walls, then enjoy a relaxed dinner of local Rayalaseema spicy chicken or vegetarian thali at your guesthouse while stargazing over the canyon.

Day 2 · Fri, Dec 26
Gandikota → Bangalore

Gandikota canyon, Belum/Caves option or return to Bangalore

Morning:

Start the morning with a pre-dawn walk down to the Pennar River ghat to catch mist rising from the canyon and photograph the fortress walls from river level, then breakfast at a local stall serving hot dosas and filter coffee near the fort entrance. Afterward drive 40 minutes to the lesser-known Kondareddy Bavi stepwell and the adjacent ancient Jain basadi ruins for a calm, 60-75 minute exploration of carved stone steps and cool subterranean chambers before deciding whether to head west toward Belum Caves or begin the return drive to Bangalore.

Afternoon:

After a relaxed riverside breakfast, drive about 1 hour to the Belum Caves complex and spend 1.5-2 hours exploring its vast passageways, dramatic stalactites and the illuminated light-and-sound display that brings the caverns to life; hire a local guide at the ticket counter to reach lesser-seen chambers and hear geological and local folklore. If caves feel rushed, opt instead for a detour to the nearby rayalseema village of Jammalamadugu for a quick market walk and hearty noon meal of regional pulusu and millet rotis before beginning the return leg toward Bangalore around mid-afternoon to keep your long drive manageable.

Evening:

If you choose to start the return that evening, pause at the tranquil Mylavaram Reservoir viewpoint just outside Gandikota for a brief waterside walk and to watch the canyon light fade, then grab early dinner at a roadside dhaba serving spicy Rayalaseema mutton fry and millet rotis to fuel the drive. If you’re staying later, join a guided twilight walk to the nearby Chakratirtha temple complex and then enjoy a riverside picnic on the Pennar banks with local snacks and stargazing before packing up for your overnight drive back to Bangalore.
