Lonavala / Khandala

Drive Mumbai → Lonavala & Khandala: Hill viewpoints and Bhushi/Tunnel stops

Morning:

Start early from Mumbai and break the drive with a coffee stop at Panchvati Gaurav Thali near the highway, then head straight to the scenic Tiger's Leap in Khandala for sweeping valley views and crisp morning air. After soaking in the panorama, take a short walk to Devkund (or if time is tight, the nearby Kune Waterfalls viewing point) for a fresh misty hike and photos before descending to Lonavala for a relaxed brunch near Lonavala Lake.

Afternoon:

After a leisurely brunch, drive toward Bhushi Dam for relaxed waterside time and classic snack stalls, then head to the lively Lonavala Bazaar to sample chikki, local sweets and pick up souvenirs. Wrap the afternoon with a short, scenic walk at Lion's Point around sunset — it's perfect for panoramic valley photos and a gentle cooldown before dinner.

Evening:

As twilight settles, unwind with a laid-back stroll and light dinner at the charming hillside café strip near Sunil’s Celebrity Wax Museum area, sampling local vada pav and hot chai while watching the valley lights come alive. Finish your evening with a short drive to Amrutanjan Point (Bhor Ghat Viewpoint) for a peaceful nightscape of the winding ghats and, if you’re up for it, a quick roadside stop at Wai-Lonavala viewpoint for star-sprinkled skies before heading to your hotel.

Day 2 · Sat, Dec 27
Matheran

Matheran day trip: Toy train/echo point & easy hikes

Morning:

Catch an early hill-rail experience by boarding the Matheran Toy Train from Neral (or park at Aman Lodge and walk into the bazaar) and enjoy the slow climb with views of the Western Ghats before arriving at the car-free plateau. From the station, stroll to Charlotte Lake for a peaceful lakeside breakfast picnic, then continue on an easy shaded trail to Louisa Point for sweeping cliffside panoramas and a few short, photo-friendly viewpoints before the midday crowds arrive.

Afternoon:

After a lakeside morning, wander through the car-free lanes toward Echo Point to try the famous cliffside calls and enjoy fresh mountain air while watching paragliders drift by; then take the easy walk to Monkey Point (Hanuman Point) for a panoramic vista over the plains and a perfect picnic spot. Later, explore the shaded trail to Panorama Point for late-afternoon light and wide-angle views, finishing with a relaxed tea at a local stall near One Tree Hill before the short sunset walk back to the bazaar.

Evening:

As dusk falls, take a gentle sunset walk to Alexander Point for a quieter panorama and watch the last light gild the hills while vendors set up for evening tea; follow this with a short stroll to One Tree Hill Viewpoint's nearby cafés for piping hot bhajiya and chai. Finish the evening with a relaxed, lantern-lit wander through the car-free bazaar visiting a local sweets stall and stopping at Porcupine Point (Shri Hanuman Mandir area) to listen to the night sounds of the Western Ghats before returning to your hotel.

Day 3 · Sun, Dec 28
Aurangabad / Ellora Caves

Drive to Aurangabad & visit Ellora Caves; return to Mumbai (trip ends)

Morning:

Depart early from Lonavala/Khandala and cruise on the highway toward Aurangabad, stopping for breakfast at Shahapur Highway Dhaba for hot masala omelettes and fresh chai to fuel the longer drive. On arrival near Aurangabad, head straight to the UNESCO site and spend the cool morning exploring the rock-cut marvels of Cave 16 (Kailasa Temple) and the intricate carvings at Cave 10, taking time for a guided walk around the complex to learn the history before the midday heat builds.

Afternoon:

After exploring the main cave temples, head to the quieter eastern side of the complex for a guided walk around Cave 21 (Ravana-Khanda) and the serene inscriptions at Cave 12, taking time to photograph less-crowded reliefs and study the rock-cut water channels. Follow this with a short drive to the nearby Daulatabad Fort viewpoint for sweeping panorama shots of the Deccan plateau and a late-afternoon snack at a roadside stall serving spicy sev and chai before beginning the return drive toward Mumbai as daylight wanes.

Evening:

After the afternoon at the cave complex, take a short drive into Aurangabad city for a relaxed evening at Bibi Ka Maqbara gardens — the mellow lighting at dusk makes the marble silhouette glow and is perfect for reflective photos. Finish with a hearty regional dinner at Ajanta-Aurangabad Road’s local family restaurant sampling kathal curry and aamti, then stop by Salim Ali Lake viewpoint for a quiet riverside walk and to watch the town lights come up before beginning the drive back toward Mumbai.
