Oman Family-Friendly 5-Day Itinerary (June 2023)

  1. Day 1: Muscat Grand Mall
    20 minutes (6 miles) from Muscat International Airport

    In the morning, visit the Muscat Grand Mall, which includes more than 150 shops, an entertainment center with a bowling alley, and numerous dining options. In the afternoon, head to the Oman Avenues Mall, home to an aquarium and a cinema. In the evening, go to the Mutrah Souq, a historic market where you can find traditional Omani goods such as frankincense, textiles, and jewelry.

  2. Day 2: Bimmah Sinkhole
    2 hours (87 miles) from Muscat Grand Mall

    In the morning, drive to the Bimmah Sinkhole, a natural swimming hole with crystal clear water. After taking a dip, head to the nearby Wadi Shab for a hike through the canyons and a swim in the natural pools. In the evening, return to Muscat and have dinner at Kargeen Caffe, a traditional Omani restaurant.

  3. Day 3: Al Hoota Cave
    2 hours 45 minutes (150 miles) from Bimmah Sinkhole

    In the morning, visit the Al Hoota Cave, one of the largest cave systems in the world. Take a guided tour and learn about the stalactites, stalagmites, and underground lakes. In the afternoon, travel to Nizwa and explore the Nizwa Fort and the Nizwa Souq. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Omani dinner at the nearby Tanuf Ruins Hotel.

  4. Day 4: Wahiba Sands
    2 hours 30 minutes (110 miles) from Al Hoota Cave

    In the morning, drive to the Wahiba Sands, a desert region home to the nomadic Bedouin people. Take a dune bashing ride or a camel trek. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Wadi Bani Khalid, a stunning oasis with clear turquoise water. In the evening, have dinner at Desert Nights Camp, a luxury desert campsite.

  5. Day 5: Al Mouj Muscat
    2 hours 45 minutes (115 miles) from Wahiba Sands

    In the morning, drive back to Muscat and visit Al Mouj Muscat, a waterfront development with a marina, restaurants, and shops. Take a stroll along the Marina Walk and enjoy the views of the Arabian Sea. In the afternoon, head to the Royal Opera House Muscat and see a performance. In the evening, have dinner at The Beach Restaurant at The Chedi Muscat.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Muscat Gate Museum, or the Oman National Museum. For a side trip, visit the beautiful coastal city of Sur or the historic town of Bahla. To maximize your fun, try some Omani food, such as shuwa (slow-cooked lamb) or halwa (a sweet dessert).
