Drive Adelaide to Bordertown — Morning departure and scenic stops

Morning:

Leave Adelaide early and head east on the A8, stopping first at Hahndorf for a brisk walk along the main street, a quick coffee at The German Arms Hotel and a chance to pick up artisan pastries for the road. Continue through the Adelaide Hills to stretch your legs at Mount Barker Summit, where a short lookout walk offers sweeping views of the plains before you push on toward Bordertown with time to explore local roadside reserves and wildlife-viewing pulls.

Afternoon:

After a leisurely morning, continue east and detour to Coonalpyn Silos to admire the vibrant silo art and stretch your legs with a short walk through the town's landscaped parklands. Later, arrive in Bordertown for a relaxed afternoon at Ngarkat Conservation Park-take a gentle trail for birdwatching and a chance to spot kangaroos, then unwind with a cold drink at Bordertown Bakery & Cafe while watching the golden light wash over the Murray Mallee plains.

Evening:

As the sun dips over the Murray Mallee, take a relaxed evening stroll through Bordertown Heritage Walk, stopping to admire interpretive signs and restored pioneer buildings before dinner. For a hearty regional meal and local wines, book a table at The Rusty Truck Bistro (or similar town pub) and finish the night with a short star-gazing stop at Woorinen Lookout just outside town-clear skies often reveal the Milky Way from this low-light vantage point.

Day 2 · Sun, Dec 21
Hay/Snowy Mountains region en route to Canberra

Cross into Victoria and New South Wales — Long drive toward Canberra

Morning:

Head east from Bordertown with an early stop at Nhill for a revitalising coffee and a stroll through the quirky outdoor gallery at the Nhill Silos before stretching your legs on the short riverside walk at Little Desert National Park (western boardwalk). Continue via the Mallee plains to Rupanyup where you can wander the town's heritage main street and picnic at Yaapeet Creek Reserve, then refuel and stock up on supplies in Hopetoun before the long push toward the NSW border.

Afternoon:

Mid-afternoon, pull over in Sea Lake to visit the striking murals around town and stretch with a riverside walk at Avoca River Reserve, then continue east to Wycheproof for a quick climb up the world's smallest registered mountain, Mount Wycheproof, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding plains. Later, detour to Charlton to browse local produce at Charlton Farmers Market (if open) or grab a late lunch at The Post Office Cafe, before resuming the drive refreshed toward the NSW border and the Snowy Mountains foothills.

Evening:

As daylight softens after a long drive, unwind with a riverside dinner picnic at Murrumbidgee River Reserve (Hay)-pick up fresh bread and local cheese from Hay Bakery and watch riverbank birdlife drift by. Later, stretch your legs on a twilight walk through Hay Plains Lookout for wide open-sky views, then settle into a cosy room at The Hay Motel (or a nearby country pub) for a relaxed evening of local lamb dishes and starry skies.
