3-Day Shoestring Budget Itinerary for Mumbai in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Gateway of India
10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Colaba Causeway

In the morning, visit the iconic Gateway of India, which was built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. Take a ferry to the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to admire the ancient rock-cut temples and sculptures. In the afternoon, explore the Colaba Causeway, a bustling street market that sells everything from clothes and jewellery to souvenirs and street food. In the evening, head to Marine Drive, a popular promenade that offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the city skyline.

  2. Day 2: Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
20 minutes (3.6 miles) from Marine Drive

Start the day by visiting Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Mumbai's most iconic landmarks. Formerly known as Victoria Terminus, the station was built in 1887 in the Victorian Gothic style and is a great example of the fusion of Indian and British architecture. In the afternoon, visit the Crawford Market, a vibrant market that sells fresh produce, spices, and household items. End the day with a visit to the Haji Ali Dargah, a mosque and tomb located on a small island off the coast of Mumbai.

  3. Day 3: Sanjay Gandhi National Park
1 hour 30 minutes (32 miles) from Haji Ali Dargah

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city by visiting the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including tigers, leopards, and deer. Take a safari tour to explore the park and visit the Kanheri Caves, a complex of Buddhist rock-cut temples and monasteries. In the evening, head back to the city and visit the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, a cable-stayed bridge that offers breathtaking views of the sea and the city skyline.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, you can visit the Chor Bazaar, a famous flea market that sells antiques and vintage items. You can also take a day trip to the Elephanta Island to explore the other caves and temples. For a unique experience, you can go on a street food tour to taste the local delicacies. To maximize your fun, try to travel during the monsoon season (June-September) when the city is at its greenest and most beautiful. Don't forget to bargain when shopping in the markets, and always carry a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated.
