Coromandel Couple's Self-Drive: Cathedral Cove Weekend — 4–5 April 2026

Day 1 · Sat, Apr 4
Cathedral Cove / Hahei (Coromandel Peninsula)

Drive to Cathedral Cove & Beach Exploration

Morning:

Start with a relaxed coastal drive into Hahei, then stretch your legs on the scenic cliff-top walk from Hahei Village to Cathedral Cove-stop at the Hahei Lookout for sweeping sea and island views before descending the track. After gawking at the famous arch, enjoy a quiet beach picnic on Matai Bay's golden sand and, if tides allow, explore the tidal rock pools and small caves that fringe the shoreline.

Afternoon:

After your picnic, wander over to Hahei Beach Reserve and rent a tandem kayak to paddle around the sheltered coves, keeping an eye out for playful fur seals and colourful reef fish beneath the clear water. Later, take a short drive to Fishermans Table for a late-afternoon seafood tasting (or a glass of local sauvignon) on the terrace, then catch golden-hour light at the quieter Gemstone Bay for a romantic shoreline stroll before returning to Hahei.

Evening:

As dusk falls, drive a few minutes to Te Pare Scenic Reserve for a short sunset walk through pōhutukawa-dotted cliffs, then settle at The Pour House in Hahei for craft beers or a shared plate on the deck. After dinner, take a moonlit stroll along Hahei Beachfront-listen for surf and seal calls while the tide retreats, then return to your accommodation for a relaxed nightcap and stargazing away from city lights.

Day 2 · Sun, Apr 5
Coromandel Peninsula (Hahei / Surrounds)

Leisurely Coromandel Sights and Scenic Drive Back

Morning:

Enjoy a gentle start with breakfast at The Garden Café in nearby Whitianga, then drive the short scenic route to Hot Water Beach to dig your own warm sand pool (check the tide times and bring a spade from the café). After a soak, take a restorative loop along the coastal boardwalk to Cooks Beach, where you can browse local galleries and sip a second coffee overlooking the quietly sheltered bay before heading inland for the afternoon.

Afternoon:

Head inland for a relaxed exploration of Kuaotunu, stopping at the charming Kuaotunu Village Store & Café for a light lunch and local treats, then wander the nearby headland to the secluded Whangapoua Beach for a quiet seaside stroll and shell hunting. Later, take the scenic drive up to the lookout at Shakespeare Cliff Track for sweeping coastal panoramas and a short woodland walk before easing back toward Hahei, timing a coffee stop at The Coroglen Tavern if you want a classic local pub atmosphere on the road home.

Evening:

Wind down with a leisurely drive up the coast to Cathedral Cove Lookout (east approach) for a different golden-hour perspective, then stop at The Mussel Kitchen in nearby Hikuai for a shared seafood platter and a local white wine. After dinner, take a quiet harbour-side stroll around Whitianga Wharf to watch fishing boats bob in the light and finish with a cosy dessert and coffee at French Twist Patisserie before heading back to Hahei for the night.
