Arrival and first city stay

Evening Arrival

Start easy at South Bank Parklands, which is honestly one of the best first touches in Brisbane if you’re arriving in the evening. It’s an easy place to shake off travel, walk the riverfront, and get your bearings with the city lights across the water. If you’ve got energy, wander the boardwalks and take in the ferry traffic; the whole area is free to enjoy and feels especially relaxed after dark. From the CBD, it’s a quick ride across the river by CityCat or a short taxi/ride-share, and if you’re staying nearby you can just walk it.

Dinner and Night Views

For dinner, settle into The Plough Inn in South Bank — a classic, no-fuss Brisbane pub that works well on arrival night. Expect mains around A$30–45, with pub staples, cold beer, and a busy-but-comfortable atmosphere. It’s a good idea to book if you’re arriving on a Thursday or Friday evening, but walk-ins usually have a shot earlier in the night. After dinner, head to the Wheel of Brisbane for a simple 30-minute spin above the parklands; tickets are usually in the A$20–30 range and night rides are the sweet spot for skyline views. Check the last ride time when you arrive, since it can vary by season and day.

Late Evening Finish

Wrap up with a quick trip to Story Bridge for those classic lit-up Brisbane photos. The easiest way is a short Uber, taxi, or a walk if you’re already feeling good and staying in the inner south or CBD. For the nicest angle, head toward the Kangaroo Point side or the river paths near the city end, where you get the bridge framed against the water and the skyline. It’s a short stop — 30 to 45 minutes is plenty — and a nice way to end the night without overdoing it on day one.
