Dubai and Abu Dhabi Itinerary Outline

Day 1 · Sun, Apr 12
Dubai

Dubai arrival and downtown base

Morning

Start gently at Dubai Mall, especially since it’s an easy first stop if you’ve just arrived or are still shaking off the flight. Grab breakfast at Arabica or Le Pain Quotidien if you want something quick, or sit down at The Cheesecake Factory if you’re in the mood for a bigger meal. The mall usually opens around 10 a.m., but some cafés open earlier, and it’s a very comfortable place to ease into Dubai with air conditioning, clean restrooms, and plenty of space to wander. From here, you’re also perfectly positioned for Dubai Fountain later in the day, so don’t rush — just soak in the scale of the place and maybe do a little light shopping.

Late Morning

Head up to At.mosphere (Burj Khalifa) for a late-morning coffee or lunch with the best kind of first-day view: the whole city laid out beneath you. Expect to spend about AED 150–300 per person, depending on what you order, and it’s worth booking ahead, especially for window seating. The elevator ride and the view are part of the experience, but the real pleasure is sitting back and letting the pace slow down for a bit. From Dubai Mall, it’s an easy indoor-to-indoor move, so you won’t waste time in the heat or traffic.

Afternoon

After lunch, shift into Dubai’s “future meets heritage” rhythm with Museum of the Future on Sheikh Zayed Road. It’s one of the city’s most striking landmarks, and even from the outside the building is worth the stop; inside, the immersive exhibits usually take about 90 minutes. Tickets often sell out, so pre-booking is smart, and if you’re planning transport, a taxi from Downtown is the simplest option and should be a short ride. Then slow things right down in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood in Bur Dubai — this is the old Dubai most visitors miss. Wander the wind-tower lanes, peek into restored houses, and if you have time, pop into a courtyard café for karak or Arabic coffee. This part of the day is best done on foot; wear comfortable shoes and give yourself permission to wander without a strict agenda.

Evening

From Al Fahidi, make your way to the Dubai Creek Abra Ride for the classic crossing between Bur Dubai and Deira. It’s one of the cheapest and most local experiences in the city — usually just a few dirhams — and it only takes around 5–10 minutes on the water, though you’ll want extra time for walking to the dock and enjoying the atmosphere. End at Al Seef, which is one of the easiest places to unwind after a full day: creekside paths, low-rise lanes, and plenty of dinner options without the intensity of the malls. Good choices here include Al Fanar Restaurant & Cafe for Emirati dishes or Samakje if you want something more seafood-focused, and you can linger over dinner before taking a relaxed waterfront stroll. If you still have energy, this is also a lovely spot to catch the city in a quieter mood before heading back to your hotel.
