Evening Arrival Walk

Ease into Georgetown with a low-key walk along the C&O Canal National Historical Park (Georgetown section). This is the perfect first stop if you’ve just arrived and want to get your bearings without overdoing it—expect about 45 minutes of flat, easy walking by the water. The towpath feels especially calm in the evening, and it’s a nice way to see the brick rowhouses, canal locks, and boat basins that give the neighborhood its character. If you’re coming from elsewhere in D.C., a rideshare is the simplest option; from central downtown it’s usually a short ride, though traffic can drag near M Street.

From there, swing by the Old Stone House, a quick but worthwhile historic pause and one of the best little anchors for understanding old Georgetown. It’s a short stop—around 30 minutes—so don’t rush it. The house is usually open daytime hours, but even if you only view it from the outside, it’s worth the detour for the sense of age in a neighborhood that’s otherwise full of boutiques and busy nightlife. After that, settle in for dinner at Martin’s Tavern, a Georgetown institution with a cozy, old-school feel and reliable comfort food. Reservations are smart, especially on a Sunday, and dinner will run roughly $25–40 per person depending on drinks and how hungry you are.

Dessert and a Night Stroll

After dinner, head a few blocks over to Baked & Wired for coffee, cupcakes, or one more bite of something sweet. It’s one of those places locals actually recommend without irony, and even later in the evening it’s a good stop if you want a casual dessert before calling it a night. Expect to spend about $10–20 per person, and if the main café line looks long, it usually moves pretty quickly. From there, end with an easy wander through Georgetown Waterfront Park—it’s one of the nicest ways to close out the day, especially if you want Potomac views and a bit of fresh air after dinner. At night it’s generally quiet and relaxed, with plenty of room to stroll for 45 minutes or so before heading back.
