Arrival and city center exploration

  1. St. Paul’s Cathedral — City of London — Iconic dome and one of London’s defining landmarks; go for the interior and Whispering Gallery. (afternoon, ~1.5 hours)
  2. One New Change Rooftop — St Paul’s / City — Great free skyline views right by the cathedral, making this an efficient next stop. (late afternoon, ~45 minutes)
  3. Leadenhall Market — City of London — A beautifully preserved Victorian market with striking architecture and a lively atmosphere. (late afternoon, ~45 minutes)
  4. The Royal Exchange — Bank — Historic trading hall with polished arcades and a strong sense of old London finance. (early evening, ~30 minutes)
  5. Hawksmoor Guildhall — City of London — A classic steakhouse for a proper arrival-day dinner; expect about £40–£70 per person. (evening, ~1.5 hours)

Afternoon

Start your first proper London wander with St. Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London. If you can, arrive with enough daylight to do the full interior properly: the nave, the crypt, and the climb if you’re up for it. The Whispering Gallery is worth the effort, and the views from the dome are some of the best in central London, though the climb is a commitment. Admission is usually around £25–£30, and it’s typically open from late morning until early evening, but hours can shift on Sundays and during services, so it’s smart to check ahead.

From there, it’s a very easy walk to One New Change Rooftop. This is one of those excellent London freebies: just head up the lifts and get a clean view back toward the cathedral dome, especially nice in the softer light of late afternoon. It’s quick, low-effort, and a great place to pause between stops rather than rushing through the city. After that, continue on foot to Leadenhall Market, where the Victorian ironwork, painted ceilings, and narrow lanes feel like a little pocket of old London hidden among the glass towers. It’s not a long stop, but it’s one of those places that rewards wandering slowly and looking up.

Early Evening

Keep walking toward The Royal Exchange near Bank, which gives you another dose of historic London-finance grandeur in a much more formal setting. The arcades and stone frontage feel especially atmospheric as the offices start emptying out; if you want a quiet drink or a browse, this is the right time of day. The area between Bank and Guildhall is very walkable, so you don’t need transport unless the weather turns bad.

Evening

Finish the day with dinner at Hawksmoor Guildhall, a classic choice for a first-night meal in the city. Expect proper steaks, excellent sides, and a slightly celebratory feel without being fussy; budget roughly £40–£70 per person depending on drinks and how hungry you are. It’s a good reservation spot, especially on Thursdays and Fridays, and it sits nicely as a final stop because you’re already in the heart of the City. After dinner, you can either head back by Tube from Bank or St. Paul’s, or take an unhurried walk through the quieter evening streets—London’s financial district has a very different, almost cinematic calm once the workday ends.
