Day 1 · Tue, Apr 28
New York City

Arrival and settling in

  1. The High Line — Chelsea/Meatpacking District — A great first walk after arrival to stretch your legs and get a feel for the city’s west side; late evening, ~45 minutes.
  2. Chelsea Market — Chelsea — Easy, one-stop dinner/snack browsing with lots of choices in one place; late evening, ~1 hour.
  3. Los Tacos No. 1 — Chelsea Market, Chelsea — Quick, reliably excellent tacos for an easy arrival meal; late evening, ~30 minutes, approx. $15–25 per person.
  4. Whitney Museum of American Art — Meatpacking District — If you still have energy, it’s one of the best nearby spots for contemporary art with skyline views; late evening, ~1–1.5 hours.
  5. Little Island — Pier 55, Hudson River Park — A calm waterfront finale for a first night and a nice transition into the trip; night, ~30–45 minutes.

Late evening: stretch your legs on The High Line

After arrival, the best way to shake off travel is a relaxed walk on The High Line, especially the Chelsea/Meatpacking stretch where the city feels most alive but not overwhelming. It’s an easy, mostly flat route with plenty of benches, plantings, and skyline views; at this hour it’s usually open and pleasantly quiet compared with the afternoon rush. If you’re coming by subway, the A, C, E, or L to 14 St / 8 Av is the most straightforward drop-off, and a taxi or rideshare from Midtown typically runs about 15–25 minutes depending on traffic.

Dinner: browse and eat at Chelsea Market and Los Tacos No. 1

Head down from the park into Chelsea Market for a low-effort first meal, since everything is under one roof and you can eat at whatever pace feels right after a flight. For the most reliable quick bite, go straight to Los Tacos No. 1 inside the market — the adobada and carne asada tacos are the move, and you can usually get dinner for about $15–25 per person without overthinking it. If you want to linger, the market is also good for a snack crawl, but on a first night the point is to keep it simple and let the neighborhood do the work.

Optional culture stop: Whitney Museum of American Art

If you still have energy, walk a few minutes over to the Whitney Museum of American Art in the Meatpacking District. It’s one of the best places in the city for contemporary art, and the terraces are worth it alone for the Hudson River and downtown views. Evening hours vary by day, so it’s worth checking ahead, but this is the kind of stop that works nicely as a 60- to 90-minute add-on rather than a full museum marathon. Tickets are typically in the $25–30 range for adults.

Finish with water views at Little Island

End the night with a slow wander to Little Island at Pier 55 in Hudson River Park, which is one of the nicest places nearby to decompress after a travel day. It’s especially pretty at night when the paths and planting are softly lit and the river feels close without the city noise dominating. From the Whitney, it’s a very short walk south; from Chelsea Market, plan on about 10–15 minutes on foot. Keep this last stop loose and unhurried — it’s the perfect way to cap a first evening in New York City before heading back.
