Late Morning

Ease into Paris with Hôtel des Invalides first, since it’s a grand landmark and an easy warm-up near the center. If you arriving that morning, aim for late morning when the light is nicer and the crowds are still manageable. Inside, the Army Museum and the dome’s gilded interior are worth the time, and the whole complex usually takes about 1.5 hours if you move at a relaxed pace. Expect admission around €17–19, with typical opening hours roughly 10:00–18:00, though it’s best to double-check on the day. From there, it’s an easy walk or short hop over to Le Bon Marché in Saint-Germain-des-Prés; if you’re carrying luggage, a taxi is simplest, but the metro is also straightforward.

At Le Bon Marché, don’t rush it — this is more for browsing beautifully curated Paris than ticking boxes. The store opens around 10:00 and is a very civilised place to wander for about an hour, especially if you want fashion, home goods, and the gourmet hall without the chaos of bigger department stores. It’s also one of the best spots to pick up a small, genuinely useful souvenir. Then head to Café de Flore, just a short walk away in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, for lunch or a coffee stop. Sit outside if you can; this is all about people-watching and soaking up the boulevard rhythm. Expect about €15–30 per person for a coffee and a light lunch, more if you go fuller on the menu. It’s busy, yes, but that’s part of the point — don’t treat it like a quick fuel stop.

Afternoon

After lunch, make your way to Musée d’Orsay, which is one of the best first-day cultural anchors in the city. It’s close enough that you can walk from Café de Flore if you don’t mind a scenic 15–20 minute stroll along the river side streets; otherwise, a short taxi or metro ride keeps things easy. Plan for about 2 hours here, though you could happily stay longer if you want more time with the Impressionists. Tickets are usually around €16–17, and the museum is typically open until 18:00, with later hours on some days. This is a very “Paris on day one” kind of afternoon: grand building, great art, and just enough structure without overpacking the schedule.

Evening

For a gentle first evening, do the Seine River Cruise (Vedettes du Pont Neuf) from Pont Neuf. It’s the best low-effort way to see the city breathe at sunset or after dark, and it saves your feet after a travel day. Cruises usually run about an hour, with prices often in the €15–20 range, and boats leave frequently in the evening. If you can, arrive a little early so you’re not rushing down to the quai. After the cruise, walk or take a short taxi over to Le Procope in Odéon for dinner. It’s one of those historic Paris restaurants that still feels alive rather than museum-like, and the surrounding streets are lovely for an after-dinner wander. Budget roughly €35–60 per person, depending on how much you order; it’s an easy, atmospheric way to end a first day that feels very Paris without trying too hard.
