Day 1 · Sat, May 2
Dublin Airport / Lucan-Newlands area

Arrival, old town history, and a first-night pub dinner

  1. Dublin Airport to Maldron Hotel Newlands Cross — Dublin Airport / Lucan-Newlands area — Get straight from the airport to your hotel to drop bags, freshen up, and recover from the overnight flight before heading downtown; early afternoon, ~2 hours.
  2. Dublinia — Christ Church area — A strong first stop for Viking and medieval Dublin that gives helpful context for the streets you’ll explore next; afternoon, ~1.5 hours.
  3. Christ Church Cathedral — Christ Church / Old Town — Step next door for one of Dublin’s most impressive historic interiors and crypt; afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  4. Queen of Tarts — Dame Street / Castle area — Classic lunch or coffee stop with cakes and savory plates, good for a midday reset; afternoon, ~1 hour, approx. €15–25 per person.
  5. St. Patrick’s Cathedral — St. Patrick’s Close — A calm, iconic final sightseeing stop with a beautiful nave and quiet atmosphere; late afternoon, ~1 hour.
  6. The Brazen Head — Usher’s Quay — Finish the day with dinner in Ireland’s oldest pub for a proper first-night Dublin atmosphere; evening, ~1.5 hours, approx. €25–40 per person.

Arrival and reset

Land at Dublin Airport and go straight to Maldron Hotel Newlands Cross in the Lucan/Newlands area rather than trying to “get a head start” on sightseeing. After an overnight flight, the smartest move is usually a taxi or Uber—about 20–30 minutes in normal traffic and roughly €20–35, though it can creep up a bit if the roads are busy. If you’re too early to check in, ask the hotel to hold your bags, then use the time to shower, change, and drink something with caffeine before you head into the city. That reset makes the whole afternoon feel much easier.

Christ Church area history loop

Once you’re back downtown, start with Dublinia beside Christ Church Cathedral. It’s one of the best “first day in Dublin” stops because it explains the Viking and medieval layers of the city in a way that makes the surrounding streets click into place. Give it about 1.5 hours and expect admission around €15–18. From there, walk next door to Christ Church Cathedral—it’s only a few minutes away, so there’s no need to overthink transport. The interior is one of the city’s most atmospheric, and the crypt is worth a slow look; budget about 45 minutes and a bit more if you like church history. If you want a breather and a proper lunch or coffee, head to Queen of Tarts on Dame Street/Castle area for savoury plates, cakes, and strong tea or coffee; it’s a classic first-afternoon stop and usually lands around €15–25 per person.

Quiet finish and pub dinner

After lunch, walk or take a short taxi over to St. Patrick’s Cathedral on St. Patrick’s Close. It’s a calmer counterpoint to the busier Christ Church area, and the nave has a very peaceful, lived-in feel that’s nice after a long travel day. Plan on about an hour here, including a bit of time in the grounds if the weather behaves. Then finish the day at The Brazen Head on Usher’s Quay—easy to reach on foot from central Dublin, or by a quick taxi if you’re done walking. It’s a perfect first-night pub: old stone rooms, good atmosphere, and solid Irish pub food. Dinner usually runs €25–40 per person, and if you arrive a little early you’ll have a better chance of getting a relaxed table before the evening crowd settles in.
