Evening

If you’re landing in the city and want an easy first night, start at The Broad in Downtown Los Angeles. It’s usually open later than you’d expect on some days, but hours vary by day and exhibition schedule, so it’s worth checking ahead; timed entry is common and admission to the collection is free, though special shows may cost extra. Give yourself about 1.5 hours to wander the gallery, especially if you want to see the big-name contemporary pieces without rushing. From most central downtown hotels, it’s a short rideshare or Metro stop away, and the area around Grand Avenue is straightforward to navigate once you arrive.

From there, walk over to Grand Central Market for an unfussy first-night dinner. It’s one of the best “everyone can find something” spots in the city, with stalls serving everything from tacos to ramen to classic sandwiches, and most vendors stay open into the evening. Budget roughly $15–$25 per person depending on what you order. It’s especially convenient if you want a casual meal before settling into the night, and the walk between The Broad and the market is easy enough to do on foot, which helps you feel the downtown rhythm right away.

After dinner, head a few blocks to Walt Disney Concert Hall for a quick architectural stroll and some of the best night photo angles in the city. Even if you’re not catching a performance, the exterior alone is worth the stop, and the surrounding plazas are lovely after dark when the stainless steel catches the city lights. Then finish at Perch, the rooftop French-inspired bistro where a table on the terrace gives you a proper welcome to LA’s skyline. Expect around $35–$60 per person for dinner, plus cocktails if you’re lingering, and if you can swing it, arrive around sunset so you get the view as downtown shifts from golden hour to evening glow.
