Check into The Oberoi Grand, Calcutta first and keep tonight deliberately light. It’s one of the best central bases in the city — right off Chowringhee — so you can drop your bags, freshen up, and shake off travel before heading out. If you arrive by cab from the airport, plan on roughly 45–75 minutes depending on traffic; from here, most of central Kolkata is an easy taxi or app-cab hop. If you have a little energy, take ten minutes just to step outside and get your bearings: the traffic, the old colonial facades, and the warm evening air are a good first taste of the city.
Head out to Park Street for your first real look at Kolkata after dark. This stretch has a special first-night energy — lively but not overwhelming, with lit-up restaurants, old buildings, and enough foot traffic to feel comfortable. It’s best between 7:00 and 9:00 PM, when the street feels animated but not yet too late. If you’re walking, stay on the main stretch and don’t overthink the route; if you’re tired, a short taxi ride from Chowringhee takes just a few minutes. Make time for Flurys, the iconic café on Park Street, for tea, pastries, or a light bite. Expect around ₹500–900 per person, and if the inside is crowded, the takeaway counter is a good fallback. It’s the kind of place that works well on arrival night because you can linger without committing to a full dinner.
After Flurys, continue with a slow, unhurried walk toward Maidan and the edge of Victoria Memorial. This is less about sightseeing in the “tick boxes” sense and more about letting the city open up around you — broad open space, familiar silhouettes, and a calmer pace after the bustle of Park Street. The walk is about 15–20 minutes from the Park Street area if you’re comfortable on foot; otherwise, a short cab ride is fine. At dusk, Victoria Memorial is at its best from the outside, with the white marble catching the last light and the lawns around Maidan giving you plenty of breathing room. Keep this stop to about 30 minutes, then head back to the hotel for an early night — tomorrow is when the city really starts to unfold.
